Accel Coil Packs, Are They Worth The Cash?

I Wanted To Know If Replacing The Coil Packs With Accel Or Other Upgraded From Stock Coil Packs Made A Difference In Performance At All?

Also Can Anyone Tell Me If Using A Cone Filter Type And The Cold Air Box Makes A Big Difference Over Putting A K&n In The Stock Location. I Bought This Ride From An 82 Year Old Man And I Doubt He Did Any Mods At All. Is There Anything Else I Need To Remove From The Stock Air Intake To Make The K&n Filter Work Better, Like An Air Silencer. If So Where Is It And What Do You Need To Do To Get To It.

I Have Replaced The Exhaust, And Done The K&n. I Am Going To Buy A Superchips Chip And I Am Thinking About Getting A High Flow Fuel Pump And Regulator? Any Suggestions Out There For Getting This Mark To The Low 14's Without Going Crazy And Changing Gears Or Nitros? I Appreciate Any Help Or Advice Anyone Can Give Me. Thanks

You can't use aftermarket coil packs with the stock wires as they will burn them out pretty soon. I had Screamin Demon coil packs and MSD wires on my 95 LSC and it was a good upgrade in my opinion. A K&N conical will flow better than a K&N Panel. However, you will need a MAF adapter to make the conical fit on the stock mass air.

IMO its not that great of an upgrade you might MAYBE gain alittle throttle response.

14's--
Chip
MAF
underdrive pullies or electric water pump
exhaust
adjustable fuel pressure regulator
high flow fuel pump
shift kit
stall converter

I did the MSD coil packs on my mountaineer, pretty much the same DIS set up as your MK8 (2 packs of 4) It seemed to run smoother, but the stock packs had 100k on them when I did it. Its not a bad idea to replace them and the upgrade is only a couple dollars more than the stock. I think Accel's run about 55 bucks from Jegs and Summit. I got my MSD's from Jegs for 72 each. Stock off brand from Autozone was 45 each and Borg Warner was like 60! So WTF spend a few bucks and get the good name brand stuff. The were a real easy install too.

BTW, I have heard that about running stock wires too, thats why I went with Aroura wires on my Mounty when I did the CP's. The pic above was taken before I did the wires.

Has anyone tried the screamin' demon coil packs?

I have.

I have the MSD wires as well. IMHO, any performance gains from ignition upgrades are mostly the result of regaining 'losses' from aging stock components. But I do believe in picking up a HP here and a HP there. After all, if you're going to be replacing anyways, you may as well make it an upgrade from stock.

Your mileage may vary and let the buyer beware.

Ford Racing COIL PACK COVERS 4.6/5.4L

First, does anyone know if that includes just one of the packs, or both of them? Would that still require me to replace the plug wires I just replaced 10k miles ago? Is that a better choice for my '93 than the aftermarkets?

I think I have 185k miles on original packs, are mine due for a change? What would be the signs be?

I do not believe those are coil packs. Most likely the 'covers' for the Gen2 design.

At 185K, I would say change the coil packs. You may have no symptoms, but could see a noticeable improvement, particularly at higher rpms.

Do they typically slowly wear out, or just suddenly fail?

Technically, they slowly degrade over time, which you will never notice. The catastrophic failure is usually due to heat stress of the windings which eventually fail causing a short or open and subsequently little or no spark output.

The DG435 seems to be designed for application in the 4 cylinder fords from 89-02.

3 91-93 FORD All Models 4-140 2.3L SOHC

6 91-96 FORD All Models 4-116 1.9L

3 00-02 FORD ESCORT 4-1998 2.0L SOHC

6 91-96 MERCURY All Models 4-116 1.9L

3 97-99 MERCURY All Models 4-1998 2.0L

4 89-92 FORD TRUCK All Models 4-140 2.3L SOHC

So, is the number a distinction just due to packaging? I wonder if it mounts the same way or has the same strength discharge?
