AC compressor savable

Noticed today that I had a spinning wheel noise like a sticking caliper. Went away by inself after about 2 minutes, but I also noticed the car feel like it has "drag", again like when a caliper is sticking, just slows itself down when I let off the gas and seems to take more throttle to get going. A/C stopped working one day last week, but then came back again the next. The air today felt cool, but not as cold as it should be.

Tells me the compressor or clutch is calling it quits. Is there a way to oil or save anything to get through the next 6 weeks. In Toronto, be like -6 in 60 days!

how do you live like that? -6? its 95 here, and im in IL, anyways, why not take it to get it diagnosed, otherwise you're gonna be switchin out parts and gambling, it could cost you more than if you just take it to have someone tell you whats wrong.

Trust me it iwll be a lot cheaper to just replace the compressor assy, which includes the clutch coil, than it would be to try to rebuild it. The labor hours to rebuild it will eat you up. Just by the new assy and do a swap.

Besides, if that sucker binds up on your completely while you are buzzing around on the highway you will be one unhappy camper. I don't like spending money on repairs either, but it is better than the alternative.

Is the compressor and spinning assembly engaged when the AC is off. So am I ok to drive around til next week with the AC off?

The compressor does not spin when then A/C is off, so as long as the clutch assembly doesn't lock up on you, you should be OK. I'd still have it checked out ASAP though...

Uh huh, and he said in 60 days, not today. Today will be 30... uh, wait you guys still use Farenheit.... that's 86 F. (Just rib'n you, I grew up using Farenheit). And -6 C is about 25 F. I don't know what part of Toronto Asim lives in... but -6 C in September? I just checked, and that literally has never happened. Maybe in November. Nothing like a Canadian perpetuating his own stereotype.

Anyway, Asim, I agree with eL eS, replace it. If the clutch binds up or the bearings go, you are screwed.

I hate to hijack this thread but have any of you actually changed your own compressor? I changed mine this weekend...bearing was shot in the old one...no leaks and 55lbs on the low pressure side...can't get the darn thing to kick on now!!! Are there any tricks I might be missing?
