About to renew registration new plates

well where do you live and how many digits are you allowed on your plates. i just got a personal plate for my 97, which i dont have yet, can take up to 2 months to get them here in florida. but mine has 6 digits but apparently i could of had 8, i dont want to say what mine says yet, i will post a pic when i get it, i never had a personal tag before.
