A noobski rear coil question...

Ok, well as with most lowered coil kits the back of mines been saggy for some time. I want to swap in some t-bird coil's i've had laying around for a couple year's. What is the "how to" when replaceing the rear coil's with new coils? I assume a little more precaution is taken. Me and a buddy did the rear conv years back but I was kinda drinking and not paying attn. :)

AFAIK:

Put the rear on jackstands
take wheels off
disconnect endlinks
support lca w/ jack
remove upper bolt
Remove lower shock bolt
slowly lower the lca via the jack till the spring is free
replace said spring and install in reverse order?


Does that sound right? Tip's
 
That sounds about right. Don't forget to 'chok' the front
wheels.

If doing both sides at the same time, then there is no
need to remove the upper shock mount.

And you missed one last thing....

Have your favourite cold (insert prefered brand) drink
As you enjoy staring at the new stance of your car. :)

I meant the lower shock bolt btw. I just wanted to make sure the steps I remembered were correct as I don't want a spring flying in my face.


Anyone running rear tbird springs have a pic of the wheel gap with them installed? With the lowered kit there is 0 gap, it's actually about 1/2" below the tire line. I'd like mine 3/4-1" above it.The rear lca's height is diff then the tbirds so I like mark specific pics please :)
 
Confused. You have rear coils? You need to replace them? :) Laughing at the "forget the air ride, convert to coil and forget" crowd.
 
Yeop.

Disconnect only one side of your sway bar end link.
Reconnect after the last spring is done.

lol, yeah the rear's are known to be too short with the kit compared to the front's. I don't bottom out or anything but I hate the look. Reminds me of a late 90's Taurus. I'd maybe leave it alone but my dual 18" box is done and it'd f'n heavy.

All I need is a finger or 2 gap. :(
 
the rears are a breeze, just did my front and rear conversion the other day at my friends house with handtools and two scissor jacks. Hate to see the air get retired for a little bit but with a baby coming and the winter here i cant afford the to lose reliability while driving the car.

Jack side up, take tire off, remove shock bolt and swaybar link...let control arm hang down...

Remove spring...install and make sure springs are seated the same..use a jack to line up the shock and swaybar bolts, repeat and done.

Yes you can do one side at a time, i dont have a pic of ride hieght but its just like where stock was, very happy with it..the back rides a little floaty and the front rides a little rougher (feels more planted and braking feels more stable) but my original air springs were starting to get tired @ 90,000 miles. Ill put the air ride back in but im thinking some koni's and vogtland shocks might be the way to go for an every day driver...

So there's no need to remove the uca bolt? Somehow I have it etched in my brain that it needed to be removed.

Definitely not...i had my friend put some tension on the control arm to make it easier but with the swaybar and shock loose the spring slid right in and out with the upper bolt in place. If i didnt have 18x10's out back i probably could have done it without taking the tire off :lol:

Fronts the same way, if you were changing out an air spring you dont have to take the UCA bolt lose, i got the air spring out without dropping it but it had to come down and be loose to put the coil spring in it.

That's looking a little high for me Zmt. Like 2" too high. You used the tbirds iirc didn't you?

Just a little too raked for me.

That's good to know. It was hard to re-picture what it look's like back there before I saw ur pic, and I sure as heck aint going outside to take a mental picture when it's 5 degrees out.

2nd pic i posted you can see the shock and sway bar disconnected, the spring in place, and the upper bolt never removed

I saw it then, I didn't have a mental picture before that ;)
 
What kind of T-Bird springs do you have? The ones from a Super Coupe or a 96-97 sport sit about a half inch lower than the LX ones if that helps you out.

That's a possibility. I'll prob swap one side and see how it sit's, If it's too high i'll use a 1" spacer w/ the lowered springs.

Afaik they're sport, guess I'll find out.
 
I already have those, thanks though.

I swapped out the rear drivers side isolators with the prothanes. Ended up gaining a little over 1/2", doing the pass side 2maro. Both would've been done in 30 minutes but i won't get into that....

Now that the one side is done it's now even with the pass side that hasn't had them installed yet. I'm thinking my irs bushings are to blame in the height difference back there..I'm going to play with the tbird springs AGAIN when I do the other side. But just from the height diff outside the vehicle the tbirds are way too tall for what I want.
