All, wanted to let you know about an issue that I think was just resolved with my 2004 LS V8. I thought that I was having transmission issues due to "bumping" when stopped at a light, hard shifts into 3rd and 4th, and generally funny feeling when doing between 35 and 50 (3rd and 4th). I had also noted a slight drop in MPG. I borrowed a scan tool from O'Rielly Auto parts, but it showed no codes at all. Took it to the Ford dealer and they found that coils 2 and 4 were bad, even though there was no oil in the spark plug wells (bad coils is of course a well known issue on the LS). The two coils were replaced under Ford warranty at 86,000 miles - no questions asked. Morries Ford in Minnetonka, MN. :)

Moral of the story - don't assume that funny shifting is transmission related, at least have the coils checked before having any transmission work done.

Just a few points here.

1. Shakes or whatever while not moving will almost always be engine and not transmission related.

2. Most LS coils failures are not related to oil exposure. There's an issue with the epoxy inside the coils.

3. The auto store scanners won't pick up most of the LS DTCs.

4. With a Ford specific scanner, you can read the pre-warning misfire counts and often figure out which coils are bad, but the dealership would have done a full stress test which is much more accurate.

Just saying thank you and the rest of LVC.

When I take the ol' gal in I'm asking them to check the coils before swapping the solenoid body. Replacing all the coils is a helluva lot less than doing the solenoid body.
