I was cruising in my 98 LSC last night when I noticed a car with bright headlights coming up behind me fast. He pulls up beside me and I notice it's an M3 coupe (probably around 1999 model year), so I put my car in 1st gear and let him hear my exhaust and distinctive 4V gurgle. He floors it passed me and I can hear his engine has a cold air intake because it was super loud and it looked like he had stock exhaust. I catch up and we are next to each other at about 25mph and I was still in 1st gear and we both floor it at about the same time. It was a super close race and we were neck and neck but I put a fender on him after he shifted into 2nd and I was still in 1st gear. By the time I hit 2nd at about 60mph he was already in 3rd I think and I hit the brakes at about 80mph with him about a half car behind. There was no traffic in sight and I hadn't been in a good race for a long time so i'm up for a couple more runs. We both hit a red light and I can hear him building up the rpms for a launch. Of course I have to launch from idle and as soon as the light turns green I ease into the throttle so not to blow my tires off like I usually do since I have no trac-loc, and he gets about a 1 car jump on me, I start gaining on him once he shifted into 2nd gear, I hit the brakes at the end of 2nd gear (not gonna say how fast that is you should be able to figure it out!) and I was side by side with him. As luck would have it we hit another red light. This time he didn't get as good of a launch, he was being greedy and tried to launch at too high of an rpm, and his tires were spinning so I was even with him and once he hit 2nd gear I started pulling on him. I shut down at 70mph with him behind maybe a car length. I rolled down my window to try to talk to the guy but he was pissed off and made a left. Now I haven't taken my car to the track lately but with the new exhaust setup and my new FK452 tires I think it can run a 14.4-14.6 all day at about 98mph with a 2.2 60 foot time. It was fun to race such an evenly matched car.

hmm i always thought those cars ran in the 13s... But I believe you my 93 runs even with my friends s2000 and was pretty close to a kids srt4 that I worked with.

The E46 333hp M3's run 13's, this was an E36 with like 250 horsepower I think... but they are pretty light and handle awesome.

Nice race, I'm jealous because I haven't had one in a long time! My friend had an early 90s BMW and he thought it was a high performance machine. He always bragged about its German engineering and how American cars sucked. So I raced him one night and man, was it a joke. He was SLOW!!!

I was looking at your mods and those are some nice times. I was looking to get that GMS COP kit but it sure is pricey. I saw their video dynos and they seem to work well for SC applications. Did you notice a significant difference with the GMS kit?

I just did the J-mod on my 98 and it feels like a completely different car. Even though I had 4.10’s in the 98 my 94 still seemed to be the faster car and I could not understand why. Since I put the J-modded separator plate in the 98, my 94 can’t even match up to it now. I think if one does the J-mod on a 2nd gen it can run with or run better than the 1st gens.

The reason I bring up the J-mod is because I was wondering if you plan on doing the J-mod, or do you already have it done? I spoke to a reputable guy who specializes in trans and chips for Mark VIII’s and he said that the chip is the electrical part of the J-mod while the actual J-mod is the mechanical part. He said that the two compliment each other. I think you would have spanked him with both.

Anyways, nice race again.

yea the e36 m3 would be a great race... e46 would be much trickier haha. I used to destroy my buddies chipped 99 e36 328is with a few other mods with my mark, but i guess the newer beamers got a little quicker. It was funny because everybody thought his car "felt" faster, but multiple races proved otherwise.

I don't have a j-mod done, just the SCT chip which increases the line pressure. You can do both but the chip is more aggressive because not only does it make the shifts firmer, but it removes the timing retard in between shifts which the j-mod does not do. As for the GMS 4V COP kit, it felt like I got better throttle response but I don't know if it added any horsepower, better/smoother idle though for sure.

ANY race story is a good story.

I lost to a G6 GT. Fast ,little car. Just couldn't match the power to weight ratio. Fun though!

I actually had a good run with a G6 GTP, I started to pull just a bit in 2nd gear... I hear they run close to a 15 flat and trap 95-96. The GT, on the other hand - there's a guy who bracket races a GT, it's consistently 7-8 tenths slower than my stock Mark VIII.
