98 Continental revs high..throttle control??

This problem is very intermittent....the rpm's steadily increase and then return to normal. Most noticeable when stopped. It will be idling higher then normal (don't know specific rpm's) and if you put it in neutral the rpm's steadily increase. My first guess would be whatever throttle control mechanism this car uses. Had a similar problem on a T-bird. Any ideas to a possible cause would be appreciated. Thanks.

Check you IAC valve. It may be dirty or damaged. Clean with quick-drying electronics cleaner, or just replace it (around $50)...
 
Thanks for the response, unfortunately I'm a muscle car guy. I haven't gotten a repair manual for this car yet so I'm not familiar with what's what on it. What is the IAC?
