Getting ready to jmod a 96 trans for my 93. I've been all over this and other forums and from what I can see I do not need to re-pin the connector. Only need to re-pin w/98 and up trans. Is this correct?
 
Bad news, you have to re-pin. But its not too hard. Once you compare both harnesses you will see what you have to do. 96 is a unique year being ODB II but at the same time its not a Gen II.

The trans harness for the 96 will not connect to the main body harness. And your 93 trans harness will not plug into the 96 trans. Basically the plugs are different styles.
 
96 trans connector is the same all thru 93-97. You reuse your trans harness, not the 96 harness. It's been done over and over again. No need to re-pin. Even a 97 trans doesn't need to be repinned. OBD has nothing to do with it.

Well then I have a very odd car then. Been down this road after having five harnesses shipped to me since I could not find a 96 harness. I had a 97 and 95 and then a 98 shipped. Nothing worked. Then I had two "could be 96" harnesses shipped, but with out 02 leads they would have been 93 to 95. Eventually I had to splice the torn connections on my 96 harness and re-use it.
 
And I forgot, even my MLPS would not connect to pre 96 harnesses. Being that my car is odd, maybe you will not have that problem. But you *may* have to re-use your 93 MLPS.
 
There are only two connectors on the trans thru all the years 93-04. One is black (98+), one is white (pre 98). It is very possible that your car had a different trans case installed at some point. But one example doesn't make a rule.

What didn't work on that weird 96 ? The connector wouldn't plug in ? wire pins in different locations ?

Just to make sure we're talking about the main connector on the right side of the trans, not the trans harness where it connects to the car harness.
 
Ah, no, talking about the main car to trans harness. The one that connects the wires out of the trans, the MLPS and the speedo gear to the body harness.

I had taken pics for the forums to trouble shoot the issue, I will try to locate them.

If the wires on the trans themselves have not changed, then I guess no problem.
 
So it's safe to say that 96 trans into a 93 car won't have to be repinned. ;)


... and your 96 is not weird, just uses a 96 specific trans harness.
 
You don't have to re-pin anything, every time I blow a transmission I have swapped a 97 or 98 in to it. All you have to do is use a gen 1 MLPS, they bolt in the same location and use you existing harness. I'm doing this again in two weeks to another mark, its easier then trying to mess with the wiring.
 
98 trans into pre 98 car will not work without repining. Not sure how it worked for you, but ether the trans wasn't a 98 trans or it had no gears other than 2nd gear once swapped.

I have found this on other Gen I parts...

93 wiper motor has different plug set up.
93 CD changer has a different plug set up..

So there are a few things that are different on the 93 than other Gen I's...
 
Thanks guys. I'm going to plug and pray, just like Windows.

I've got the trans on the stand, pan off, and draining fluid. Looks nice and clean in the pan and case. Going to check all solenoids with Volt/Ohm meter to make sure their good to go then tear it apart.

Update

Project is moving along. Got the main control off and apart. Going to drill it out today, put in upgraded parts, and get it back together.

One other thing I found out is I have to use the TCC from my 93. When I checked all the solenoids with the ohm meter the 96 TCC is 12.8 ohm (should be in the 10-16 ohms range), and the 93 is 1-3 ohms. Going to buy a new TCC for it, this way I don't have to pull the pan off the 93 to do the swap. Also going to replace the front/rear seals, IAC, O2's, and more than likely the EGR tube.

Next hurdle is the rear trans mount. Since they are no longer in production I guess I'll have to fab one up. I saw a post where they used a Fox body Mustang mount (no pics/details). Anyone seen/done this?
