95 alternator in 96?

Will an alternator from a 95 Mark VIII fit directly in a 96? I know the 95 has a 120amp and the 96 is a 130amp but do they mount exactly the same?
 
Also, what tool do I need to remove the 4 main bolts that hold down the alternator?
 
Im almost positive it mounts up exactly the same. You just need a 10mm socket to remove the bolts...
 
ALL Mark VIII alternators are interchangeable. Now, the original ones may NOT have the lower bolt holes slotted, so you may have to totally remove the lower bolts to pull the old alternator....I KNOW that the older ones are not slotted as most of the newer ones are. Every nut/bolt is 10MM for the alternator even the battery connection is 10MM. Just make sure you either pull the positive cable on the battery, or bring some tape and wrap the battery connection up real good so it does not short out.

OK I removed all the bolts from the 95 alternator except the lower right bolt. My oversize after market water pump pulley is in the way of the bolt, my socket doesn't fit onto the bolt, I need just a couple more MM of clearance. The bolts on the water pump pulley are also 10mm but when I try to take them off the pulley just spins. Any suggestions would be appreciated...
 
If you have one, wrap a strap wrench around the pulley. If you dont have one then go and buy one because you will probably use it many more times.
 
Just FYI in 96 they went to a 130 amp alt from a 120 amp. Yes you can interchange from almost any 4.6L including Aviator, but there will be no advantage and you may have to flip/change the harness.
 
I could see an advantage of using a Crown Vic police interceptor alternator. They are a high output alternator, just not sure of the amps? It is very easy to find a wrecked low miles police interceptor in a junkyard.
 
You could be right! Lemme go check. But I dont see why an interceptor would require higher amps, all those police toys in there dont take too much to power.

I looked it up and stock is indeed 130 or 135, but there are after-market ones at 175 amp and up.
 
I don't know for sure, I just thought they were 160 amp. The police add ons take a lot more power then you would think. they have an on board computer and that stuff always going and when they lght everything up most have, a light bar, head light and tailghts flashing, the lights behind the gril, and both spot lights lit up. That has to be a few amps, especially when they sit idling with all those lights blazing.
 
I dont make the specs, I just read them. Most of those add ons are done by a company, a third party, not Ford. I would NOT be surprised if those guys add on a 160 amp as standard practice.
 
we do not add an alt. when we do the add-ons. they come with 200A alternators.

iirc the alt on my 95 was very shallow compared to the regular sohc alternators.
 
OK so I put in the 95 alternator into the 96. Voltage checked out fine and the car starts very easy. However, I can hear a noise coming from the alternator. It is not as high pitched as it was on the old 96 alternator where the bearings failed. Mysteriously, when I take it around the block and go wide open throttle, when I return, the noise goes away. Any ideas? This alternator is a Motorcraft re manufactured, it was in service for only one year in my 95 LSC and then it sat for another year...
