I am new to the mark VIII and to LVC. My car is pritty mutch bone stock only mod is a K&N filter charger for a mustang that I installed in place of the original air box. Looking for a little more power, need to keep up with my wifes 07 SS Impala. Have been thinking about getting a programer to get a little more out of the PCM. Was wondering what are the good ones? What are the bad? Also open to any other ideas for some quick HP gains.

OBD-I, You have to chip it.
Do a search to decide what is right for you.
I would fix the air ride first.
FWIW...gear is what will wake up the car.

Some guys find early pcm's with a little warmer tune.

Gawd fuggin forbid someone search for anything any more.

Get stickers. And a wing. Some neon too.

Save up for a blower.

Filter probably does more harm than good. Its a fact that the stock box and the mark in general breathes very, very well. After all, the biggest restriction is the throttle body. So unless you drive around all day at WOT, no fancy expensive filter will do good at all. Just FYI.

The biggest gain is just replacing the plugs (Autolite 764s). The cheap copper ones work well. New coil packs (Ford OEM only) and wires are good. 5W-20 I think is the recommended oil now, not 30 which the manual originally said.

Getting advanced areas to work on include a nice IMRC cleaning and replacing the IAC which may stick a little. There is also a rubber vacuum t-fitting back by the throttle body that leaks all the time. It may have a slight leak now. All these things add up!

Then consider a j-mod (search please) once things are in line. Its a good modification and if you do all the extras its less than $200 in parts if I recall.

And after all that, the car will still be no faster.

I can tell you from experience you will not keep up with the IMSS.

We had an 06 with DiabLEW tune, k&n intake, and hogan dp and it was crazy fast.

You should be able to just swap to a W3Z2 ECM for the hottest stock computer.

You can go further and either use an SCT or Quarterhorse hardware interface and do it yourself. You can just buy a chip to give you the same thing done by pros. Less fun but perhaps more useful to most.

SCT rocks...

I had Sniper, it sucked. I dont care what anyone says the software is made for a mustang...not a Mark. Good price otherwise, but sucks for the Mark VIII.

The XCal3 is fixed now for the Mark VIII...so you should have no problems if you have OBDII...

OBD1 - make sure you have your mods set and get a chip burned

You really won't notice too much between the W3Z2 and the stock 94 Tune ... most 94s have the same stock tune and it's almost as good as the W3Z2 Tune. I have both and I really wouldn't knock my self out looking for the W3Z2 to swap into a 94, a 95 yes.

I guess you dont work on cars much :)

Sorry dude but the only performance upgrade you mentioned in your entire post was the JMOD. And you are also arguing with the wrong person if you haven't read my signature lately. I know how to make my car plenty fast all motor. I'm only a track visit away from making "13.59" old news. Thank you.

Like I said, I guess you dont work on cars very much. :) If you did, you would know that taking a car overdue on maintenance and doing just basic things can indeed increase performance & economy. Why add header to a car with plugs and wires 50k miles past due? Etc.

Yeah, overdue maintenance items can bring the car back up to par with the performance it had when it didn't have issues(like perhaps when it rolled off the assembly line:confused:) LOL In other words STOCK! Again, he is looking for EXTRA performance beyond factory. And grasshopper, if you think I haven't worked on my own car, think again. Plugs and wires aint chit LOL

Ok now that we have determined you are clueless, here's my two cents:

I like to consider these things to be the FANTASTIC FOUR for performance

1)Gears
2)Stall converter
3)Exhaust
4)Tune (Lonnie at BOC had one of the fastest all motor marks, so I would seek him out for a tune because he knows these cars)

After you do all of this, and fix your air ride.
Gears after that tune it if you have any money left.

I just put a engine in the car with 87k on it. Installed new plugs wires, water pump and rear main seal at the same time. Working on the car isnt a problem. Keeping up with my wifes SS Impala is. Was thinking about going with lincoln motor sport's performance chip, and 80 MM mass air sensor for starters. Anyone have any input on them?

That's not aggressive of enough thinking my friend to keep up with an Impala SS. ;) And "performance" mass air flow sensors are a waste of money in my opinion on a naturally aspirated Mark VIII. I am still using my stock 80mm MAF with no issues at all. You will never peg out the stock meter all motor. It's all HYPE. Don't ignore the "fantastic four" if you want to go fast. I have a Cobra intake and a dyno tune to add to those and this is my car now. Sometimes I have to put this video up when people ask how to go fast all motor. I roll into the throttle because on street tires, it blows them off out of the hole. 13.591 in my signature is my old time on the chitty mail order tune:

A few years ago I had a stock 94 Mark VIII and it would out run my wifes supercharged 03 Buick GS ??

He must be talking about the newer impala ss with the front drive 5.3, the supercharged 3.8s weren't a whole lot faster than a stock mark viii.

Never had the SS to the track but motortrend reported low 14's high 13's in stock form, and her car has a cold air intake and cat back system. I know from driving the car my self right now the way I sits my mark would stand a chance would probably take the ss of the line. After the impala hooks up it would be all over. Impala is a fun car to drive but has no traction and alot of torque steere at low speeds due to being front wheel drive. I wont bother with mass air then. what year cobra intake will I be able to put on my car?

Your car is a first generation and has a half decent intake on it. Your money would be better spent on, (1) Gears w/trac-loc (4:10)(4:30 optional), (2) Stall converter 3,500 or higher stall (3,800 recommended), (3) Third cat delete w/ X-pipe or H-pipe with duals or 3" or over single exhaust (headers or 03-04 Cobra manifolds recommended but optional). (4) Best is a dyno tune by someone who knows Mark VIII's after all maintenance and mods are completed. There are cheaper canned tunes if interested just do some research with facts to choose. These 4 things will give you the most bang for the buck and if done right should stomp that Impala SS. If you are knowledgeable and can do the work yourself it can be done for a reasonable price. Otherwise it isn't cheap. Low cost example is Right on the Mark build thread.

Thanks Don pfau for the info. I planned on loosing the cats and making a free flowing exhaust. I am capable of doing the work my self, witch definatly helps. As for gears. I plan on driving it daily so dont want to go to wild there. 3:73 or possibly 4:10. Will see exhaust first anyways.
