It's been hot when I'm getting off work and now the A/C has started blowing hot air.

Looks like the clutch isn't engaging, did a search and didn't find anything to up to date. I've been having alot of problems caused by bad connections, (I-80 has been like a off road race track the last few years, they just got it repaved) maybe that's the problem?

Any ideas where to look for problems and how to check things?

I don't know. Where is it. Is it labled?

It's under the hood on the drivers side, inside the black fuse box. High current box. Also, when you turn your air on, check to see if your cooling fan is coming on at the same time. Your VRCM module could have went bad or the fuse for it might be bad. I still don't see how they can check your 134a pressure without the compressor being engaged and running.

If all fuses are good and your cooling fan IS coming on when you turn on the air, go get two cans of what you see in the pic below. One can with a gauge and one without. The line and gauge can be moved from the empty can to the full can. Both cans will be right at $40 and it works. O'Reilly's and Wal Mart has it.

If there is no pressure in your system, the compressor will not engage. Once the pressure starts to build, it will come on and off. Add a little at a time. When the compressor kicks on, press the button to add more and finally, the compressor will stay on. If it's out completely, you will be getting into the 2nd can.

If you turn the air on and your cooling fan doesn't come on, your VCRM has most likely went bad and for a 96, it can be a bit costly. It's year specific and can't be changed out with another year. It will have to be from a 96. It's mounted on the front of the car, right behind the grille, in front of the condenser. It's the little black box with fins on it but hopefully, that part isn't bad.
