Has anyone bought this and confirmed this is the correct kit and has everything needed for a full rebuild?

Timken P/N DRK311

Do I also need a pinion bearing and seal?

Autozone, partstrain, and rockauto (lowest price) all reference this kit.

Getting some noise so I'm rebuilding and converting over to traction loc (for 28 spline 8.8" IRS). No gears/8.8" swap for now as my MPG would be destroyed on my 80mi/day driver.

And I assume RTV is used to seal the cover back on since I can't seem to find a gasket for it.

The gasket may be re-useable like the trans pan gasket. I'm not sure. The kit you are referring to seems to have all the bearings and seals, not sure if it includes the pinion bearing or seal. It doesnt include anything for the actual differential rebuild, seems to just be a bearing and seal kit.

I am preparring to do the 8.8 differential only swap using 3.58 gearing when I find a suitable, affordable differential. Ford had discontinued the 8.8 28 spline trac lok so I am thinking of using the Auburn or Eaton. They are alot more expensive but short of rebuilding an 8.8 28 spline trac lok, thats about the only option. I'd upgrade if you are going to open the diff anyway.

Sorry I dont have much good info on your kit but I havent done alot of differential work...yet.

Partsgeek shows a different picture than the other sites so it appears it may have the pinion bearing. Next step is to get it on a lift and see what the noise is coming from. Pinion bearing might be okay. Coincidentally, it says the kit is for the 8.8 too so you might be able to use it there as well.

I don't want to change ratios purely for mpg reasons (I would go to 4.56 if I did). That might change in a couple years and then I'll go to 8.8 and move my t-loc over.

BTW you can save time and money and go 3.58 with LS ring and pinion keeping 8.0 case (assuming your gen 1). No custom mount bracket required (another reason I'm staying 8.0 for now). Though finding a t-loc might be tough now. Didn't know they stopped making them.

Damn, I got mine from Summit for about $200. Still might be cheaper than a full swap and custom bracket if you think you'll never want other gear options (certainly faster and easier).

Yes I am staying with the 8.0 case and just swapping out the differential. I havethe 3.31 gears now but I plan on going to the 3.58's when I do the swap. Ford still makes the 31 spline 8.8 T-lok but they no longer make the 28 spine version. So the only options are the Torsen, Auburn, Yukon Gear, and Eaton. All of which are $4-600. The Traclok was around $200-250. I may pick up a used one for $50-75 and rebuild it with the carbon fiber clutches. That'll put it around $250.

02LincLs, You should go for a ride in mine first before going to 4.56. I think its too deep. Don't get me wrong she gets to 100 quick, but if you plan on going on trips anywere it cruises on the highway at 2900 rpm @ 70 mph.

It would be more of a weekend car at that point. I'd be afraid of my fuel bill, not the RPM's.
I like to go to the track despite not having any time for it lately. With 3.31, you can finish in 3rd at 6500RPM. To justify the time of the extra shift that will be required, I wanted to go much steeper. Based on input from some people with 4.10's, it looked like they finished at 6000, which leaves a little on the table, but may also be a little safer. It would be either 4.10's or 4.56 though.

Sad is they day...

... when I have to take my car to a friend at a Toyota dealership to correctly diagnose an issue. I had brake dust all over my driver side rear wheel that built up pretty quickly. I told them to inspect the bearing first as I thought it was my prime suspect, and rearend for a noise I was hearing. The Ford dealer charged me $35 to tell me my pads were low. No shiz! I can tell that by looking at it in the driveway. They said the bearings were fine, along with the ball joints. I asked them if they would install my traction loc diff but they wanted me to buy a rebuild kit for the rearend and charge me up the a$$ for the installation. I also asked them to inspect the charging system (mainly the alternator that they replaced a year ago) for the cause of the interference I was hearing on the radio and the random check charging system lights that would come on (but never at the dealership). They said they did not hear the noise despite it being non stop for over 6 months (it was still making the noise when I left the dealership). I left all pissed off after wasting a day off and some money and made a few calls..

I ended up talking to a friend that works in the service department of a Toyota dealership. We went for a quick test drive to confirm the noise. We threw it up on a lift and I threw it in gear and got it to read about 50mph (where the noise occurs) and he went around with a stethoscope. Within 60 seconds, he identified the noise as the wheel bearing (I did not tell him that was what I suspected, just that there was noise in the back). Pads were low so I replaced them and the rotors while it was up in the air.

As far as fixing the bearings, my axles are rusted pretty bad on the nut end so I'll probably have to buy new ones. I was a little hesitant to buy autozone re-manufactured axles given that I'm at the 400 ft-lbs torque range. Anyone have any issues with these reman axles and do you think they are up to the challenge?

Thinking of calling the dealership manager and telling him about my experience. Its sad that I have to go to a Toyota dealership to get a reasonable level of service. I have driven nothing but Fords for the 15 years that I've been driving. I was loyal to my dealership that I bought the car from until they disappeared a couple years ago. I was looking for a new dealership that was local to me (since I moved recently) that I could rely on when needed, and possibly buy a Fusion from in the next 2 years. I'm going to ask if they want to make it right and replace the defective out-of-warranty alternator free of charge to make up for the complete lack of service, insult on my intelligence as an engineer, car enthusiast, and loyal customer. Not sure I want them to do the traction-loc install anymore though. I think I'll go back to the Toyota dealership to replace the axles and install the t-loc. Sad!

That IS sad. Sounds like the techs at the Toyota dealership know what they are doing. Id have them do your t-lok.
