Need information and help....I have a 2000 Town Car that needs a transmission 4R70W and I have a used 40,000 mile used trans from my 98 Mark VIII. Is this a direct swap or what changes have to be made to use it. Thanks,
John

I thought I read the TC's have a longer output shaft and housing. Meaning the mk8 trans is shorter.

Measure the tailshaft.... Some Town Cars got extended tailshafts and some didn't, just don't remember which ones did and didn't. Also check the plug going out of the tranny, the main one; if it is black you are GTG, if it isn't you have elecronics to swap.

If they have3 the same length tail shaft and the right electronics it is a straight swap.

It should work and the electronics should be the same. You may have to swap the tailshaft housing and shift linkage. I don't think any more internal changes were made again until 03' or 04' and I'm not 100% on the shift linkage but when I put a 99 Crown Vic transmission in my Mark VIII the linkage I had to swap over from my old tranny.

FYI you cannot just change tailshaft housing. The output shaft would also have to be changed since they are a matching set. The whole trans would have to be ripped down to do this since output shaft goes in thru front of trans. Thats if trans are not same length.

I have the longer extension housing, with the stock tailshaft. I also installed a 1" shorter driveshaft from PST in clearwater.

Yes you have the complete longer trans and just shortened your DS , correct?. Or are you saying you put longer tailhousing on a short outputshaft so the shaft hides inside the long tail housing?
