what am i looking to spend i have96 base model I'm thinking about changing the gears but i never did this before. do i change the ring&pinion or is it more to it than that and who do i get it from...thanks

You will need to get gears which come with the pinion and a trac-loc differential for an 8.8 28 spline. You can get the trac-loc from Max at Five Star Ford. You should also get an install kit for the gears as well as a rebuild kit for the 8.8 with new bearings.

The gears are something you will have to get aftermarket, but you can get a used trac loc and have it rebuilt by the person who is installing your gears to save a bit of money.
Expect $150-200 for the gears, similar for a new trac loc, and around $350 for install and diff rebuild parts. You will probably encounter a very annoying vibration from your driveshaft at interstate speeds once the gears are installed - a driveshaft upgrade is over $400.
Overall it's a pretty good chunk of change, but it's worth it.
