2001 LS V8 starts but dies if not on the gas!?!?

:confused: my 01 LS V8 starts but idles crappy and dies unless im on the gas, where do I start?
 
Well, there are a lot of possibilities, but your IAC would probably be the best one to start with. Tapping it lightly with a hammer may be enough to unstick it to verify that it is the problem. If it is, you may be able to clean it and get it to work for a while longer, but I would recommend replacing it. Does it run will while you are giving it the gas? If so, then the IAC remains a good suspect.
If it runs poorly even while giving it the gas, then your MAF could be bad or dirty, you could have an air leak somewhere (manifold or intake), or you could have the common problem of failing COPs (ignition coils).
 
Watertown huh... My brother lives in Watertown and I've taken the LS up there quite a number of times! Sounds like a fuel delivery problem, maybe fuel injectors, maybe throttle body, maybe idle set too low. I would check the idler first.
 
Fuel delivery would give more problems when fuel demand is higher (when you push the gas pedal), not when it is lowest (idle).
There is no idle set, and I don't know what you mean by "idler." Idler pulleys would have nothing to do with this.
On your gen II, the idle is controlled by the electronic throttle. On his gen I, idle is controlled by the IAC.
 
well after a little looking, i found the culprit, one of the plastic connections on the intake was broke and sucking air, runs fine when held together. So much ****ty plastic on these damn cars lol but was also wondering about a way to test injectors since I have oil in my gas and hard to start at times
 
You have oil in your gasoline?
Please explain. (Certainly, injectors would have nothing to do with that. I could see a leaking one causing gasoline in your oil, but not the other way around.)
 
well, did an oil change and my oil was very thin(water like) and stank of gas, and my car doesnt always start right away, gotta crank it for like 30sec sometimes, thinkin an injector might be leaking and dumpin gas in my oil and causing it to lose prime makin it suck to start.
 
Okay, so it is gasoline in the oil after all.
First, how is your LS running? Is the check engine light on, and does it ever flash? Misfire problems are common and if you have enough bad misfires, some gasoline may make it's way down the cylinder walls and into the oil.

If you have a leaking injector, then you should also have flooding sometimes when you go to start the engine. Is that happening?

The three ways that I know of to find a leaking injector are:
1. Mechanic's stethoscope - use it just after shut down to see if you can hear fuel flowing through one of the injectors.
2. Remove the injectors and have them tested.
3. Remove the intake manifold and reconnect the fuel line. Pressurize it and see if any of them spray or dribble fuel out.

I've heard of removing the fuel rail and injectors instead, but it seems to me that the injectors would just pop out of the rail when you pressurized it, unless you could come up with some way to hold them in.

Be warned that if you remove any injectors, you will need to replace the o-rings.

The injectors don't have access to the oiling system. The only way I see fuel getting in the oil is past the rings. That would cause other problems like blowing smoke (blue) and a noticeable use of oil.

There is nothing wrong with plastic vacuum lines. They are less susceptible to collapse. They are also easier to assemble as an assembly. Just replace the brittle lines with vacuum hose and connectors from a local auto parts store.
