Im new here and just join, but I have read many threads on here about problems with the Lincoln Ls transmission. I just purchased my 'first gen' 3.9L about a month ago which now has 114k. Over the weekend the transmission began to feel as though it slipped out of gear because the rpms would increase with little to no movement of the car. The check transmission alert came up along with the 'E'. I have tried turning it on and off sometimes it will engage in gear sometimes not. I have also unplugged the battery to see if that would reset things. I believe it is electrical and not mechanical. Just looking for a little insight on what to do. I have read about 'reflashing' the powertrain control module through a dealership, and i have also read about replacing the solenoid pack. If anyone has had this issue also i would love to hear what you have done to fix it. Thanks!

Thanks, yeah im not sure what to do i think im gonna set up an appointment to reflash the pcm first. I also heard that replacing transmission fluid could be worse than good for the tranny.
My trans lasted about 3 days after the "Check Transmission" warning on the message center. Had it rebuilt February 2012. Look for someone in the ATRA network, and expect it to never feel the same again (and not in a good way).
I wouldnt spend $ on it. I did a lot of research on mine when it failed. It ended up being a servo bore issue. A round hole that had started to take on an egg-shape from mis-aligned servo rotation, causing fluid to flow past when it should normally shoud not. The parts to repair and reinforce were included with a rebuild kit. $2100 later, the job was done. New filter, fluid, etc. included.
I'd Google "5r55 servo bore" and see if the reported symptoms match your own.

No, that's nonsense. Changing the fluid at any mileage won't cause any harm, but it also won't fix your problem.
ok thanks for the insight so far, much appreciated! The ford dealer called me today and told me they drained some fluid out along with some metal shavings. They said i would need a new transmission. Im paying for the diagnostic and having it towed home to look at things myself.
