I just drove in to SA with distance to empty showing 22 miles. I proceeded to put 19.5 gallons in the tank! I maybe squeezed the last 50 cents in after auto shutoff to make it an even $50. I drove 413 miles on the previous tank of gas. Does that seem possible? It was over 19 gallons when the pump shut off.

Not worth forcing more gas into the tank than what's recommended. It can actually mess up the EVAP system on some cars, which can lead to drivability issues.

^ Yup. Gets into the EVAP line and does bad to the charcoal canister. Fill til it clicks, no more.

While reading about something, I saw this: "For instance, Kung notes that in the summer a Mini might be able to hold 14 gallons of fuel in a tank whose labeled capacity is 13.2 gallons. In the winter, it might only hold 12.9 gallons." Your Fuel Economy Gauge Is Fibbing

So that might actually be the reason why. However, once full, going beyond the auto-off is the no no.
