04 LS stock thx navigation question

The system is DVD driven, with a receiving antenna mounted in the center of the dash, where the sun load sensor and alarm light reside.

It also has a dead reckoning capability. Dead as in no satellites can be found like when in a tunnel. The system uses the wheel speed sensors in addition to a gyroscope to figure out where and how fast the car is moving. The result is that the nav will work without the satellite.

thats right and if you have one the dvd is in the trunk of the car on the top.

yeah frogman i dont know how the nav works. It needing a cd i thought it didnt use a setallite but i didnt know how it followed the car pin point to where it actually is.Me and my dad had a long convo on this and he insisted it did use a satellite but not being sure i came on here.And yeah its the stock thx nav that had the dvd player for the map in the trunk.

Well Alax... the GPS Network (aka. constellation) is actually fairly simple in design, if not massively complicated in practice. I suggest you do some reading here:

Lots for you to learn there, and you won't have some jerk (like me) laugh at you over the interweb again... at least over GPS stuff.
Basically, the satellite tells the car where it is on the DVD map. Unlike systems like OnStar (which can track you) the LSes satellite communication is one-way; "download" only, it doesn't transmit.

YES it only transmitt so you can go to the hotel with the subtitute and get some brain without worrieng some one inturupting your class...

The navigation system receives timing signals from several GPS satellites at once. It compares the timing information from each satellite relative to when it received it. From this it can calculate how far it is from each satellite. Once it knows that it can calculate where on the planet it is, in terms of longitude and latitude. That's all the first GPS receivers did, they would give you your position in terms of longitude and latitude.
Now, is where the map DVD comes into play. It uses the map information on the DVD to look up where on a street map the longitude and latitude it is at is on the map. It then displays the map with your position on it. It also uses the map DVD to calculate routes for you, and to try and keep track of your most probable position if it can't receive enough satellites at any given time.
It needs the map DVD to be able to show you a map, it's that simple. The GPS satellites transmit timing signals that can be used to calculate longitude and latitude position. They do not transmit actual locations or any kind of map data.
