does anyone know how much difference there is betwween the 04 and the 06 other than superficial changes. I'm looking at getting a workshop manual and I think the cars are pretty much the same, ie..power train, suspension and other mechanical aspects. thanks for your help..

There are some differences. I know my 06 uses a different oil filter size than the previous couple years. I think the oil capacity is slightly different too.

No mechanical differences. The oil filter and capacity difference is if you have a Sport with oil cooler.

Yep. Both my 04 and my 06 are sport /w oil cooler and take the same oil filter.

I have an 04 and an 06, and as far as the service manual goes, I can't find any difference. The 06 manual is more accurate/correct than the 04 manual. Do keep in mind that the V6 was not offered in 06, so the 06 manual does not cover the V6.

Gcwimmer/Joegr you guys are probably right about the whole cooler thing. When I went to Autozone and looked up an oil filter in the catalog none of the ones that were listed for the 04/05 fit the 06 except for the STP. I have always been a Fram guy so I bought the Fram filter for the 04/05 and the hole and filter were both completely different sizes.
It was a pain having to go get the right filter while my car was up on ramps!!

You're better off without Fram anyway. I just order several filters from Max every so often.

I have heard a lot of bad things about Fram. Is it all true? Maybe...I have always been using Motorcraft and will continue to.

Anyways, i was in the auto parts store few days ago picking up oil and oil filter for the diesel truck and out of curiousity opened up the Fram and Motorcraft box and starting comparing both. I was suprised to find out that they were actually identical. They had the same part numbers on it and everything.

Not sure, if anyone is familiar with 6.0 liter diesel motors, the oil filters they use are exposed, meaning they don't the metal casing around it.

I know Fram used to make all of the filters for Ford, i guess they still do.

i think those type of filters are called inserts, =since you insert them into a casing meant for it....

IIRC, the oil cooler became standard equipment in '03, at least on the V8s. The cooler interface decreased the available space, necessitating the switch to the shorter oil filter. My non-Sport '06 has the oil cooler, FWIW.

SonnerLS, all '06 LSs are V8 Sports. For 2006 they dropped the V6 and non-sport packages.
There were differences in trim levels, like the standard equipment, Premium package and Elite Package, but they are all Sports. That paraphrased info is straight out of the 2006LS brouchure.

Actually, all 03+ U.S. delivered V8s have the sport package. Non-sports V8s were available in Canada and a few were ordered here. There were also, IIRC, 4 V6 sports that were 03 media vehicles with hand matched shocks.

Good call LS4me,
I just wanted to clarify that the was no such thing as an 06 non-sport. But I guess there is no such thing as an 03+ non-sport if it was a V8! There was only non-sport V8s available in 00-02 MY.

Actually, IIRC, one could order a non-sport 03-06 due to chain requirements. Chains aren't "allowed" on the 17" wheels. They also came with the non-SST shifter; again IIRC.
