'02 LS Fuel Pump

'02 Lincoln LS V8 - Miles:117K+

The car would not start today. The engine would turn over, but not even try to fire.

I checked the fuse in the trunk for the fuel pump - it was ok. Checked the fuse in the engine compartment for the fuel injectors - that was ok. Checked the fuel pump shut-off switch at driver kick panel - that was ok. I did not hear the fuel pump through the fuel fill area or in the back seat when the key is initially turned on (ACC/RUN). I put a pressure gauge on the fuel injector rail or what ever it's called - no fuel pressure. The Garmin Mechanic ecoRouteHD on the Kenwood DNX9980HD shows zero fuel pressure. I read a bunch of the threads. I need to order parts.

Lincoln dealerships wants $501-$509 for the fuel pump, $1800 for complete install with parts (probably with more parts than actually needed).

(If I need either of these, where can I order them from? I don't see a real "Ford" part listed anywhere, including RockAuto or TascaParts).

i.e. What should I order besides the Fuel Pump and Fuel Filter?

Thanks, some good info in that thread. Most of the searches I did were for "turning-over-but-no-start" key words since i ran into the same problem a couple days ago. After sitting outside for a few hours it will crank and crank but not start untill the 4-5th try. After that it would run just fine. Wierd thing is it starts just fine first thing in the morning (garage).

Process of elimination I figure the fuel filter is the first thing to check, hoping it's not much more serious than that.

You don't really need the tool. That makes life easy, but not necessary. A good screwdriver/chisel/drift and a hammer will suffice.

Double check that you have voltage at the fuel pump connector for the first ~10 seconds after turning the key to RUN. If so, then it is the pump or some blockage in the system. If you still don't have voltage, then it could still be the REM or some part of the wiring.
 
The fuel pump arrived (it has a gasket that came with it).

The fuel filter was replaced last year, but I will replace it again once the new one arrives.

I called Autozone & Oreilly's and neither one have the fuel pump retainer ring removal tool for sale or rent (one place had a complete removal kit for $100).

I called NAPA and they have the fuel pump retainer ring removal tool available for loan, no charge, just a security deposit that you get back upon return. So I cancelled the order I had placed earlier for the fuel pump removal tool as it had not shipped yet, no need to buy one when I can get a loaner or improvise.

Hopefully I will get this done in the next day or two. Here's a couple pictures of the new fuel pump.

This is a risky recommendation as written, because if someone goes with it they might pick a tool that sparks when hit with the hammer, then they go boom. You can use a brass drift, or a very hard plastic rod if you don't mind dozens of tiny taps, but don't use anything that might spark when either the hammer hits or when it slides along the metal of the tank. Brass drifts are cheap enough, think I paid 20 bucks for a package of brass drifts, and they won't spark when hit with anything.
 
Done. It fired right up. Test drive complete. Thank you to LVC and it's members!
 
Must have been the day of the fuel pumps. Changed mine today, too. I went the junkyard route for $20. Running well now. Glad you're good now.
