Hi, I'm bravely working hard to get my beloved LS V8 back on the road after the intake to exhaust timming chain broke. Had to do a complete engine swap which was a rather not fun experience. Engine is in and running. Unfortunately the radiator fan isn't cooperating.

Has anyone ever sucessfully taken the hydraulic fan motor apart and put it back together? I have searched the service manuals and Inet for help with no joy.

Can the hydraulic motor be replaced with electric?

I bought this car new and have loved it up to now. I hope I can get it back to life.

if you need a brand new fan assembly i have one that I ended up not needing after it was diagnosed by two different mechanics/shops. Plus a thermostat and all the o-rings.

I can make you a good deal.

ive taken my fan motor apart. you have to be very careful because there is a tiny little key that holds the gear to the main fan shaft. it falls out very easily. i lost mine and had to cut the smooth end of a tiny drill bit to replace it. then you have to vaccum the hydraulic system down to get the air out once its all back on the car. and i would teflon tape the main line coming into the fan when you put it back in because it tends to leak once taken apart

The reason it is hydraulic in the 00-02 is that the alternator could not handle the extra draw of an electric fan motor in addition to all the other power hungry toys in the car. Heated wipers, heated mirrors, rear defroster, heated seats are all very power hungry an are usually all used simutaneously on cold days. The 03+ used an electric fan motor but had a beefier alt to handle it. The fuse for the fan motor is 60A, to give you an idea of the power required.

Actually you can replace your hydraulic fan with an electric one. i just recently did it on mine. I actually took the pump completly off, and unbolted the sensor of the old pump and left it pluged in and ran a 99 inch shorter belt over-top of the idler pulley and bolted on a 2,950 Cfm electric fan. i have been driving on this setup for about a month now with no problems what so ever. So yes it can be done.

Man, if you had a how-to on that you'd make many a friend on this board. :D

its actually just as easy as it seems....anyone can do it.. i just dont see why more people haven't allready done this

Thanks!!

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions! I took the motor apart. I re-polished the matching surfaces of the motor (housing to georotor) with some 1800 grit polishing mesh on a surface plate. I had to do this a couple of times until the motor would spin free after reassembly. But it back in and after a bit of fun getting the thing bled it seems to be working fine.

LS is on the road again.
