No base model mark 8 EVER came with 3.55 gears.
NO LSC or ANY Mark 8 came with 3.73's.

The correct and accurate information IS.

Base models had 3.07 gears
LSC's got 3.27 gears

I'd love to go more gear, but other threads only ref 4.10's and up. What combos are available? Let's say 3.50 or 3.90 are available- what fuel mileage would result with all else stock?
 
Kevin, try this....

Get out on the freeway, get up to your normal cruising speed.. then turn off your overdrive.

The RPM's in 3rd gear at cruise speed with stock gears will be almost exactly IF not exactly what your RPMs at cruise speed in 4th gear with 4.10's

We compared my friends 410 car with my car when I had stock gears in this manner and the RPM's were literelly identical.

So give that a shot... when you turn the overdrive off, if the RPM's aren't too high for "your personal preference" then 410's are the gear for you.

I went from the stock 307 gears to 373's and.. IMHO it was a waste of money for the MINUTE gains..

go 410's or higher, otherwise your not really going to be pleased with the outcome, or the expense.

Thanks for the info. When you went 3.73, did you time the car at the track to see what difference it really made or was it seat-of-the-pants?
4.10 just sounds like a whole lotta gear!
 
Out of the box, we went to the track and I only picked up barely .25 in the 1/4.

But after some work with the PCM it turned into .3-.4 under the best conditions.

Honestly I was pretty disapointed in how very little change there was going from 307's to 373's.. especially considering the cost.

Seat of the pants was changed a bit, the car definatley wasn't as sluggish.

410's are a pretty steep gear, you are correct.
BUT the very long legs in the 4r70w help offset that.

trust me on this.

I've said this over and over and I'll make you the same offer I have made to others.

put 410's in your car, if you feel it's too much gear I'll swap you my 373 diff for your 410 diff and I'll pay the shipping charges.

out of the 7-10 people that I made that offer to, exactly ZERO have even considered taking me up on that offer.. one was local here in houston as well.

You'll love the 410's
99% chance you'll be disapointed in the 373's
 
I dont know if you plan on drag racing any at all, or if you have.

Consider this..
with 373's my car is crossing the 1/8th mile finish line in second gear.

in the 1/4 mile the car shifts into 3rd gear about 50 feet BEFORE the finish line and the car feels like it's "not really pulling acrossed the stripe".

the 4r70w have very tall gear ratios and a fairly decent overdrive, so.. the old adage applies..
DO NOT FEAR THE GEAR!!!

XLRVIII, I agree. I have 373s and wish I put in 410s for the price! What do you think the top speed of 410s are? vs. the 373s? I have never tryed to max it out......yet
 
Mike had 4.10 in his 95 and I think I remember him saying he hit 150, just remember that from and old old thread though.
 
Your top speed with gears would be whatever 3rd gear tops out at which depends on the gearing, transmission (Mike had a manual 5 speed), rpm limiter and tire size,
 
Well in that case I don't know how he went 150+ you don't want to be accelerating in overdrive, your tranny will be toast real quickly.
 
There's nothing wrong with accelerating in od, just want to back off as it shift into od. I've ran my vic up to 135, shifted into od at 105.
