$1,800 '98 Mark VIII base issues

I swapped out the center motor for the one that worked in the '94, but it still doesn't work. My guess is the gear that the rod goes in is stripped. Anyone know if I can get a fully manual track? - Maybe from a Thunderbird or Cougar?

$1,800 '98 Mark VIII base issues

Can the seat motor be changed out? Thanks for the compliments. Hopefully it will truly be worthy after I spend some time with it. I've been studying the factory manual and still am not sure whether I can change out just the seat motor or must replace the entire track assembly. Any...

$1,800 '98 Mark VIII base issues

I found this 128,000 mile '98 ivory pearlescent base with blown airbags. Since my defunct '94 had the coil springs conversion featuring Eibach springs and Koni shocks, I bought it with a clean Carfax but without roadtesting (engine started and sounded fine) and crossed my fingers. The car has...

    Catastrophic engine failure???

Next... I'm guessing on the dropped rod, myself. Unfortunately, the trannie also needs overhauling - it's been clutch shuddering for like five years now. And the body has some serious corrosion issues. So, this Lincoln has breathed its last, most likely. For my own curiousity and education...

    Catastrophic engine failure???

You guys are too funny... OK: I had to go buy a breaker bar and the 18mm socket in question. The engine turns one way and locks, turn back almost one revolution, locks. That is with the transmission in neutral. Starter removed.

    Catastrophic engine failure???

That was the side that had the cat replaced with a non-factory piece, so maybe the space was a bit tighter than stock. When I had turned the key last time I checked, it made a loud clunk sound like the motor was locked. No, I haven't turned the crank snout because I need to get the right metric...

    Catastrophic engine failure???

The starter passes the test. There's no way I could have used a 1/4" on seized bolts, especially after breaking one ratchet. Maybe if the bolts come out easily and with a lift you could work around the cat, but in this case the front of the exhaust system had to be dropped. A major PIA...

That's a great looking LSC. I used to live in Columbia (USC), but prefer it out here in the country. Driving is better.

    Catastrophic engine failure???

Note: The Lincoln Mark VIII manual is misleading in that in the starter removal section it says to remove the two bolts holding the starter, reinforced by the exploded diagram showing a starter with only two ears - but it really has three bolts, which it explains in the installation paragraph...

    Catastrophic engine failure???

Honestly, I don't see any damage just the major rub of tire rubber against the plastic inner fender liners. I'll try to pull and test the starter tomorrow. Thanks for everyone's best wishes and speculations. I'll post the results as they come in.

    Catastrophic engine failure???

Yathink? Last time this happened, again, I'm going on about how the '55 in the TA has never left me stranded and that same evening - boom! - water pump decides to quit. Bad karma or something... I swear that if the engine isn't toast I'll keep my big trap shut!

    Catastrophic engine failure???

OK, I just drained the oil and filtered it through a white rag: It looks fine with not a single metal shaving or anything. I'm suspecting the starter, so I'll pull it and bench test it. I'll try the breaker bar thing after the starter is out, just in case the starter is stuck in the engaged...

    Catastrophic engine failure???

The oil is full with no sign of leaking. There's a possibility that the bottoming out has nothing to do with what happened to the engine, if that's where the problem turns out to be. If the engine jumped timing, wouldn't it have done damage right away, not wait until I drove another five miles...

    Catastrophic engine failure???

So, I'm taking my two Pontiac friends to lunch and while I'm talking about how great a car the Mark VIII has been for me, how reliable, great engine, a little history on the DOHC, etc. - I kick it a few times, hit a bad dip in the road, the lowered car bottoms out hard, tires scrub - and then I...

Hello. I've owned my '94 white pearl Lincoln Mark VIII from 2000. It's been my trusty daily driver, more like my daily beater, especially the last few years. With the exception of changing fluids regularly, even checking oil samples with Blackstone (always "your engine looks great, continues...
