Didn't have to drain ours .. it drained itself. Filled it back up with Pennsoil Mercon type PS fluid. Works fine. Gone to the mechanic today for a fix. Saw the ballast is out on the neon brake light following the car. Always something with these, isn't it? One minor problem after another...
Mechanic said "well, bring it in and we'll see what we can find ..." Not gonna go that route. Last time a "should be a 30 minute job max" turned into a expensive 4 hour task. No fixed cost, or at least a reasonable estimate, no go ... I'll see if I can get the at-plug voltage measured then...
"Checking the switch" requires tearing out the steering wheel assembly, correct?
Fuse is good, checked that. Wipers wipe, just no washer spray. Don't hear the motor when pressing the switch. Does the car motor have to be running for it to work? Really puzzled and don't want to start tearing...
Tried all I can think of to find out why the windshield washer died at the same instant the washer button broke and popped out. New button installed, wipers wipe but no washer!!
Do I really need to tear the front of the '97 Mark off to get at and check/replace the washer motor? Are there...
The shop let it drain for about an hour until no drops dripped. And used a loc-tite/sealant type of stuff on the converter bolt so it would seal and not leak.
Interesting! We enjoy our 97 Mark VIII Lincoln but parts are getting really difficult to find ... especially for the air suspension system. Engine is the basic crate unit; engine dies at 150K, take it out, drop in the crate engine, and away ya go!
I'd heard that the Mark VIII had a lot in common with Jags, especially the transmission, etc. The mechanic at the trans shop who knew what it really needed said "not the same as Jags at all that I know of ..." So ... I really don't know. As long as they keep it serviced ... that's what I care...
Whatever. It's a Ford under that fancy dress. Any oil leak from any car is not good. They are designed to keep the oil in the motor, not drip it onto the ground. Unless it's a "total loss" chain oiler on an old Triumph motorcycle. Then oil on ground is ok; means it's working.
Don't make the mistake I did; took our '97 to a "we're good" tranny shop which only dropped the pan and then filled it with "Universal fluid", which was TOTALLY wrong!! Took it to another shop recommended by a Mark VIII owner and they did it right. Drained and flushed it all, converter, etc...

Thank you! With that clue in hand I took a close look at the tab setup and can just see where those two contacts have been touching. The long tang looks like it goes in the bottom.
On the 97 Mark VIII does the long prong on the windshield washer button slide into the up or the bottom side of the hole in the stalk? Want to be sure before I latch in the replacement one. How does one get them out in the first place?
That is one of the reasons I keep the old $9.95 a month + 25 cents a minute outbound calls. No GPS. Cannot be tracked unless making/receiving a call and it is turned on. My last killer phone bill was $11.77 ....
