Boiling Coolant?!

So after replacing all the thermostat housing and thermostat I noticed my 06 LS was boiling coolant (which it was doing before!) Any ideas of what it could be? I don't seem to be leaking coolant and I didn't drive very far before it started to boil.

Any ideas?
 
Is it actually coolant and not watered down a lot or something? Could check your mixture with the gauge thing that i have no idea what the name of it is lol sorry. That stuff really doesn't boil lol
 
Well I used universal green coolant because that's what I had on hand. I'm wondering if it will stop if I flush it and replace it with the expensive ass Ford Motorcraft gold stuff.

I'd do it this way (least expensive to most expensive):

1. Check for coolant in oil/oil in coolant
2. Pressure test the cooling system (free tester from the parts store you just have to front money. You get it back when you return the tester.) Fix leaks and hoses as necessary. You can test your cap this way as well.
3. Check your A/C condenser for a whole bunch of bent fins, bugs, and other things which may not allow airflow to your radiator. Clean, remove, replace as necessary.
4. Ensure both of your fans turn on to their full potential.
5. Check the water pump weep hole
6. Replace radiator cap
7. Replace thermostat (180* thermostat)
8. Clogged radiator (pull, flush with water from a hose, clean off bugs, etc.) Now buy some cooling system flush and flush your entire cooling system by following the directions on the bottle. You'll do this with everything put back together. Use distilled water.
9. Get your cooling system tested for exhaust gases, this will indicate a bad headgasket and give you a good reason for doing it.
 
Did you bleed the system according to requirements? Also, 50/50 coolant such as Prestone is fine for our cars. It sounds as if you have air in the system(on first thought).

Also, when you say boil, do you mean actually mean bubbling coolant in the degas bottle?

The thermostat was replaced so that takes care of #7.

Can someone explain "bleed" to me please? I've asked some car guys and everyone kind of has a different answer.

In short without going to long winded, bleeding removes any air from the pressurized cooling system of a vehicle. Air in the system is hard(stressful) on the cooling system and components which comprises it. Also, one common issue you may see is the vehicle's heat not working properly. Meaning cool air at idle but heat at driving speeds.

Nine list, but there are at least three problems with it.

First, bleeding the cooling system should be on the list, and it should be number one on the list. In this case, it is clear that the OP didn't bleed it, and that may be his only problem.

Second, the LS only has one cooling fan, not two.

Third, a 195 degree thermostat must be used. (Check engine light anyone?) Going cooler won't help with overheating at all, and it will decrease mileage, performance, engine life, and increase emissions.

Also note that premixed coolant is a good alternative to distilled water and anti-freeze.

That link is for gen I. The gen II procedure is slightly different, but the gen I procedure should work for you. Note that at step 10, you may have to go to 2K to 2.5K RPM to get a steady stream of water out. Also note that the engine fill cap is a little different.

Hmm....I will not do what you did to me in my thread and call your response to the op's inquiry "pointless". But, I will ask that to take the time to research a bit more thoroughly before communicating your troubleshooting steps and giving LS owners your once again "invaluable" feedback. Joe pointed out 3 important errors with your response.

Just look for Zerex G-05. It's the OEM manufacturer for Ford's yellow antifreeze. Napa sells the Zerex G-05 around here. It's the same price as the universal extended life stuff. They want $17 for the regular and $12 for diluted 50/50. The Prestone extended life "universal" is $17 and $14 for diluted 50/50.

As picky as these cars seem to be, I would just go for the application-specific fluid instead of the universal one. I know there has been a lot of talk in other places regarding how universal it really is.

^Was the bus you rode to school in really short with tinted windows? Cooling system maintenance and trouble shooting is pretty universal. I think my help was damn good since I have never worked on an LS.
 
Operative words, never have worked on an LS. And some cooling trouble maintainence is indeed universal but as you learned, not applicable universally.


As far as the bus one liner, possibly yes. But, I was busy attending to your incorrect directions to the bus driver on how to fix the bus so we could get you to school on time.

I stopped looking at the general purpose forums because so many on them thought that just because something worked on car model X, it would be the same on model Y. I only ever give advice on what I have had, worked on, or otherwise knew fairly well.

This forum is for Lincoln LS owners. I think that it is reasonable for them to come here expecting to get specific advice on their specific car (though I do wish more would say which year and which engine they have).
 
The crass responses to threads by the imuture members deter from the excellent advice forwarded by the more mature members. Age may or may not be a factor. We all search for advice to minimize our work and exspense. Not all people have the same mechanical comprehension. Some people take awhile to think things through, life's exsperiences help us along the way and knowledge gained by performing tasks is priceless. We can only hope those seeking help and advice can see through the adolescent responses and take the knowledgible advice in the spirit it is given. 1 good helpful post is worth 1000 BS responses to those seeking help!
 
Searching would have gotten all the info the OP needed. But meh *rolls a blunt* I have never worked on an LS because where I am living the only people I see driving them are soccer moms and guys that have their hair cut like Pauly D's. They go to the dealership for everything. If the OP didn't know he needed to bleed the system, he really had no business taking the T-stat out in the first place.
