quick trac loc ?

If you get a 31 spline trac-lok, you can just swap the 28 spline side gears into it.

Not always true you can't do this with a stock 01-04 cobra diff.

What was/is different? We changed one for an F-150 - not an IRS, but I've seen the side gears machined for IRS, and it isn't that bad either.

Also, I have a Trac-Lok unit that came out of a solid axle car right now that I'm putting in my Mark VIII. I'll let y'all know how that goes :)

The center pins can be different dia's, right?

I think the 28 tooth pin is longer than the 31 tooth pin, but that's the only difference. I'm not positive, I helped my buddy do that one on his pickup a long time ago, but it seems like that was the only difference.

I think both use the same diameter - 1.625 inches according to my records.

Again, I'll let you know for sure when I rebuild the unit I have right now.

We must be talking about different pins. I mean the cross pin the one that goes thru spider gears. I read there are diff dia's 5/8 and 3/4 or something.

No, we're talking about the same pin. Obviously, 1.625" can't be the diameter, the paper must mean circumference or some other pin maybe the length of the little pin that secures the big pin. They probably are different - I might be remembering something wrong. As a matter of fact, it seems I tried to take a trac-lok unit from an Exploder and had a problem because those are 31 spline axles.

It's called a pinion shaft, but I just checked the unit I have. It's already a 28 spline (I got it out of a 1988 Thunderbird), so it's the same anyways. I don't have a 31 spline handy to look at, but I will definitely research this further for the OP.

Ford 8.8 PINION shaft dia is 1.625 thats the dia of the pinion not the cross pin.

The pinion shaft is bigger in the 31 spline also the spider and side gears have different cut teeth.
And for qualification of my answer I have an 04 cobra diff in my car and before installation I went to Tousley ford with gears in hand and compared them to 28 spline gears.

So what your saying is you have special bigger pinion 31 spline 8.8 gears? Never ever heard of that. Please show these larger pinion gears. I know 9 inch rear has large and small pinion.

I LOL'd when I saw a thread started asking a simple question that turned into 15 posts. Well, I guess I just made it 16. :p

No the ring and pinion gears are 8.8 as always and are interchangeable with all 8.8s. The gears in the carrier are different as I said thoes are the spider and side gears.

Correct you must have the .875 pin. I have not ran into one yet personally.

Just want to make sure all the confusion was from calling the cross shaft a pinion shaft. Long as its all clear its good. Carry on lol

haha i made this before i went to work this morning and did not expect this to still be alive when i came back lol

my poll thread came up the other day and i thought that was long dead too
