So much for that (front end damage)

That's a 3 series. The LS is in the same category as a 5 series and higher.

I would not go from an LS to a smaller car with a 6 cylinder. And I mean a fully loaded 06 do that means hids, adjustable rear headrests, front and rear climate controlled seats and the thx system.

Now if I can get into a 740i then now we talking.

Okay....which 5 series exactly? I am very interested in what your perspective is. Is the 8 cylinder the only delineation?

First your debate was performance. The 03 540I had 290hp. The 03 LS came in at, if memory serves me correctly, 280hp.

But let's stick to the 06's. Which 5 series 06 BMW would you most closely associate the LS to?

But, nice commercial. I remember it well. Funny thing is we never see BMW having to make a commercial to compare their vehicle to the LS. ;)

Below is 2006 550(v8) for slightly less than the $20,000 threshold you mentioned. AND, the 550 makes 360hp. 2006 BMW 550 owners may take offense to you comparing the LS engine to what their engine makes as they flip us BOTH the bird flying by. LOL. ;)

Its still not a V8.

And you can get an 06 LS for much less. Its also a less common vehicle and a Lincoln.

Black.....the 550 is a v8. Do your homework. 360 HP for less than 20 grand actually is not bad deal. In short, one can find a stock 300hp BMW but there will never be a 360hp stock LS(sadly).

Yeah not saying that's not a cool car but this is a Lincoln forum and we love our cars. Next car won't be a Lincoln it'll be more like an AMG or even a G8.

It's hard to go from luxury to non luxury tho.

Still strongly prefer the manual for following reasons:

They don't break.

They don't downshift unless you want them to (hate the downshifting when I only want moderate acceleration).

I can downshift in anticipation of hard acceleration (waiting to pass on a two laner), now largely moot since cars have soo much power and autos downshift so quickly.

Easy to maintain.

Cheap to maintain (ZF auto fluid retails for between $7 and $70 per quart, used by BMW, Jaguar, Hyundia, Ford and now Chrysler). There seems to be some disagreement on the use of the Mercon SP ($7/quart) in the other vehicles ($45 to $70 per quart from what I've read on various forums). Manuals use standard ATF or I use Pennzoil Sychromesh fluid ~$5/quart and I only need 2 quarts. I'm not even going to talk about filters built into the pan so that filter changes require changing the pan at $140.

They are all I've ever owned. Yeah I've been driving for 33 years and have never owned and automatic, a FWD or an AWD vehicle, only manuals and only RWD.

they don't break. LOL. only cuz you don't have enough power. ;)

but really, you can break anything. knew a guy who went through tremec transmissions like oil changes in his mustang.

Maybe, but look at the message boards for any of the cars and see what problems start happening at 100,000 to 200,000 miles.

Look at the number of people here with complaints of transmission warning lights, bad shifting or solenoid packs going bad.

With the ZF boxes on the BMWs, Jags and Audis, all have problems at over 100,000. So some recommend changing the lifetime fluid and filter every 80,000 as cheap insurance.

10 quarts of fluid - $400
Filter -$140
That's over $500 of cheap insurance.

I know I probably sound crazy figuring expenses out that far into the future but I tend to keep my cars a long time, and buy used after others have taken the depreciation hit.

Total Vehicle history
1978 MGB 1.8L 4-speed (Purchased $1600 in 1986, still have)
1977 Ford Van 4.9L three on the column (1989 - 1996; got for free at 100,000 junked at 250,000)
1987 Merkur Xr4Ti 2.3L turbo; 5-speed (1992 - 2003; paid $2000 with 86,000; sold for $250 with 270,000 miles)
1990 Mustang LX 5.0L; 5 speed (1996 - 2009; paid $6000 with 60,000; traded Cash-for-clunkers $4500 with 150,000)
2000 Lincoln LS 3L; 5 speed MT(2003 - maybe 2011 depending if I get it repaired; paid $16,800 with 36,000, currently at 140,000)
2009 Ford Ranger 2.3L; 5 speed MT (Purchased new Cash-for-clunkers $15,500, has 20,000 miles)

I can purchase back the LS and have $3500 to repair it. or replace it (2 to 4 years earlier than I planned) with:

If buying automatic:
XJ8 around $12K-$15K for cars with 50K to 60K miles alot of car for the money due to bad reliability rep.
300 SRT-8; cheap interior, very heavy, nice engine, thirsty, still expensive.

If manual
CTS-V (rear differential worries me) $17K - 21K for 04s and 05s with 50K to 70K miles.
CTS 08 or newer, still haven't dropped enough in price, older ones have a crappy interior.
G8 - Way too expensive with MT cheapest I've seen is low $30s
GTO - currently priced right but small trunk, only two door.
Various BMW 3s and 5s from 2003 to 2006, seem pricey and not sold on reliability and parts cost (obviously the Jag has more reliability questions but its purchase price is suitably discounted).

Marc, It's not that BMW isn't a great car they are,, they were the only other car I seriously looked at before I bought my 2004 this last Aug.

but Black is correct,, you just can't get a compairable car equiptment milage at anywhere near the LS price.

I paid 6500 for mine with 54K miles 2K for new paint and LSE frontbumber plus LightRings and I have never been happier and I am still under 10K.

I love the 550 you refer to,, but their is no way I could throw another 10K at it! Hell, I'd rather buy a second LS. or in my case I didn;t have to sell my F150 so my LS can stay warm in the garage all winter!

Not throwing stones,, the prices just don't jive.. The Lincoln is alot more bang for the buck!

If u say so ..... I'll type later. Out with something pretty and blonde at the moment. :).

That sucks man. Hopefully the other party’s insurance will pay for the damages; filing claims with your own provider isn’t good for your rates as I’ve discovered now that I’m looking for reasonable online car insurance quotes.

People asked for phots so here are some of my vehicle (where it was parked when hit) and the one that hit me (2008 Chevy Cobolt - in the yard it was towed to).

Going to chime in on the bmw & mercedes vs LS debate.

I love my LS. However I would have to say that trying to compare the prices as if the cars are the same is incorrect. The Lincoln depreciates at a more rapid pace, and for good reason. The most obvious indicator of Lincoln's cheapness is the amount of plastic that breaks. Black's car was MSRP at around $50K brand new. 6 years later there's probably broken plastic all through it. If there isn't yet then give it a year. It seems whenever I replace everything and have it in like new condition something else randomly breaks.

From 06 to 09 I worked with someone who had a 99 328i. He never had it in the shop for anything but regular maintenance and changing seasonal tires, and not once did I hear him complaining about an issue with his car due to cheap quality of parts it was made with. Then he bought his 07 550i. Here is where I laugh at this comparison. I have ridden in the car on several occasions and driven it once. The LS doesn't even come close.

Can't compare a vehicle to another by looking at the options they have. One must experience them. In all reality the LS is kind of a "poser". Yes it is nice on the inside (especially with all options and triple black) with plenty of exterior eye candy and has decent enough power with v8, but the quality is just not there. That is what you are getting when you pay the extra money for the BMW or Mercedes. We have all heard "you get what you pay for". So until I can afford the BMW that I want I'll enjoy my LS.

Speaking of my LS, anyone have an ashtray assembly? Mine won't stay shut.
