My 2005 Lincoln LS has an odd problem... The transmission seems to slip during low acceleration between 2nd and 3rd gear when the a/c is on. It doesn't happen every time, but I do notice when it happens. Any suggestions?

It is very unlikely that your transmission is slipping.

It is very likely that you are experiencing occasional misfires due to one or more COPs (Coil-On-Plug) becoming marginal. Unfortunately, this is a common problem for the LS. You'll find a lot of posts on this site about it.

BTW, the A/C being on or off wouldn't have any effect on the transmission, but it would (because it changes engine loading) have an effect on misfiring or at least your detection of it.

yup. usually when the transmission slips in the LS it is on initial acceleration. COP's for sure, when they misfire it feels just like the transmission is slipping.

I had NO CEL and my car was so bad I almost didn't make it to my mech. I went ahead and changed ALL the COPs along with the plugs, since it would take 1/2 the time for plug change since the COPs were out of the way. Also, my '06 only has 48k miles!!!

Some misfires cause CEL's and some dont.

Dont forget to change the valve cover gaskets too. They leak and cause oil to get into the plug wells and that helps contribute to misfires and fouled plugs.

I know this thread is a little old, but... I've got a similar problem with my 3.9 '05 w/ 102K, I've had it since 54K. My wife drives this regularly, I don't since I got my 'Vette ;-) On cold engine start up I get a hard shift 1-2, then it flares out 2-3, & to a lesser extent 3-4, sometimes it shifts pretty erratically. When it warms up it usually drives fine. The transmission shop in town has had the car for a few days now, and are scatching their collective heads, I know these guys, and this is unusual for them. Occasionally I get a noticable miss, and since I've noticed the transmission issue I get a frequent Advance Trac notification.

With this thread, and some other reading I've done most of the symptoms point to the COPs. While it's in the shop they're changing the fluid and filter. Anything else I need to look at?

Tim

COP's first. If it still shifts funny then change the shift solenoid inside the transmission. If they are changing the trans fluid and filter have them do the shift solenoid while they are in there. Its a fairly common problem. Also make sure they flush the tranny fluid. Just dropping the pan wont even get half the fluid out.
