Oh, I Love Snow

We got 1/2 inch of sleet/ice followed by about 8 inches of snow on Tuesday. I've had no trouble driving to or from work this week. New, all season tires and about 200lbs in the trunk. I left the TC on since there are no hills to speak of on my 8 mile journey. The drive Tuesday evening was very different than today's drive. Tuesday the snow was fresh and unplowed while today's was hard packed and mostly frozen back to ice about 1 inch thick over the roadways. The only difficulties I had was getting back into my garage. The slope on my driveway is 18%:eek: Took 4 tries Tuesday and only 2 yesterday and today, but I shoveled it off Tuesday night. But I'll be damned if I'm leaving my car out again for something like this to happen:

I was stuck in the snow yesterday too! Worst blizzard we have had in awhile. -20 wind chill, blowing snow (8 in.) and ice etc.

I became stuck on the road while I was going about 30 mph and the snow on the street started to bog me down. I hit the gas to keep some momentum and that's when the T/C kicked in and stopped me dead right there. Most of the time I consider the T/C more of a hindrance then a blessing. Fortunately a guy in a Expedition stopped and pulled me to a close gas station...Thank God!
 
Experience driving in snow helps alot, practice practice practice. I was 14 in SD when I got my license and my first couple cars were RWD, 79 Caprice, 81 Malibu Classic. Both were a pain in the azz to drive in the deep snow but I managed. I can only remember one time getting stuck to a point where I had to get help. It was whiteout conditions and I should have said screw work anyway.

On the other hand... The LS is pretty bad in the snow, I don't know if its the open rearend or what but I've been stuck in 1/2 of fresh powder snow. With TC off I did eventually get some momentum and was fine but it took a couple minutes. Then using 3rd gear starts helped alot also.
 
That pic was from the "ice storm of 2009" December I believe. It hit us hard here in NW Arkansas. Some people were more than a week without power. There was easily 2" covering the LS that morning, and that is after the 2" that was on the ground preventing me from getting into the garage. Had to say home for a couple days after that one. Luckily I only lost power for about 24 hours.

It's about 5F outside right now and we are expecting -10F overnight. Crazy since we hit about 72 this past Saturday. That was a great day, I got the car washed up all pretty :rolleyes: then this snow came in and sacked the whole middle of the country.
 
eff the snow.... i was out yesterday as it started snowing really bad, go to my friends apartment and someone was stuck, get out and help him, and by the time i got back (about 15 minutes) my car (actually my dads car) was completely buried in a 3 ft snow drift.... and to top it off i had to push it out, and my friend had to be behind the wheel controlling everything and shes never driven a car before in her life

I was driving up and down the driveway at the age of 8.. Learned how to drive a stick at the age of 11.. It was fun back in the day when I wasn't paying for the gas.. :)
 
You guys have trouble with the LS in the snow? We've had our '04 V8 for 4 winters now and the car works really well in any snow conditions we've driven it in. Even my wife says it's fine in snow (including snow storms) as she drives it to work daily - we live on the edge of suburban to rural/farmland so it's not nicely plowed city streets.

Maybe it tires? Instead of going for "performance" winter tires (like the Blizzak LM-22) I bought the Blizzak WS-60 winter tires instead (better for deeper snow) and went down one size. Never got stuck or had issues in 4 Canadian winters (never put extra weight in the trunk either).
 
I passed a couple LS'es (In my Expo) the week we had our blizzard, they looked awful!

I didnt dare take mine out though; it was bad enough in my neighborhood.

You are probably right. Performance winter tires are made to handle well, which they do extremely well (better than my all seasons even), and it comes at a cost. This is the 2nd time I swapped winter tires so I think I'll just suck it up and just move on.

The WS-60s are pretty good in the dry/cold - I don't see the point of the performance winter tires in climates where you actually get a decent amount of snow because it means you'll likely not drive the car hard enough to warrant high performance tires during those months anyway (even when dry - roads are cold, salt and loose crap on roads, etc).
 
Try new tires! got 4 inches today and she plowed right through. Does yours have the advance track?
