hi, my cars been leeking antifreeze so im gnna replace the reseviour....well i wanna change thermostat too, but someone told me that i would have to replace the whole housing to replace thermostat (i guess hes talking about the T above thermostat. well my question is what do i have to do to replace my thermostat? and would a bad thermostat make my reseviour crack? because i think their might be too much pressure in coolant reseviour. any help is greatly appreciated! thaNK you. btw its a 2000 lincoln ls v8 sport.

1. Often the plastic halves of thermostat housing crack. If yours is not yet cracked, it may crack when you remove and replace the thermostat. The thermostat is a multi-piece assembly that the housing holds together against spring pressure.

2. No, a bad thermostat wouldn't make the degas bottle crack. It cracks because it can only hold up for a certain number of thermal cycles. (I consider this a design defect.)
Pressure in the cooling system is controlled by the cap on the degas bottle, not the thermostat. The cap has a pressure relief valve that vents pressure once it exceeds about 15 PSI.

1st gen is 16 PSI.. ;) Well, that's what the manual says.. lol

I suspect that the gen I and gen II pressures are the same. The gen II manual says that the cap fails if it is not between 13 and 18 PSI. That would make the nominal pressure 15.5 PSI.

cool man thanks alot, jusrt got done pulling off degas bottle, its cracked in 4-5 spots. so im going to order that and thermostat....do u know what kinda thermostat i should put in to make it run a little cooler for summer? thanks again...

Stock. Cooler = less mileage, less power, more engine wear, check engine light on.

Whoa, Joe missed something! :)
Gen1 (2000), so the thermostat is the traditional one piece type. I don't know how you Gen2 guys deal with yours. :p

To c.camp: the housing on the Gen1 is a lot less troublesome than the Gen2. Just be careful when removing the rad hose, and it's just three bolts that holds on the tstat cover. Make sure the tstat is lined up correctly - there's a notch in the cover for the bypass hole. You do NOT remove the entire tree. It's quite easy to replace the stat. Go ahead and remove your belt first, clean off the pulleys after the job then reinstall the belt. Antifreeze shortens a belt's life.

Oh, I see. That's what I get for assuming...
Good advice on the belt too.
