mid grade or premium

the only thing that is insane, is trying to under stand why someone would buy such an expensive car and then think that the engineers that built it and put the sticker on the door had no reason for it.

(edit: i guess i do see that now that the used prices for this car have fallen so low that even dumb high schoolers can afford it, people can easily afford the car but not afford the gas, damn that depreciation)

Yup. For an even better example, slide over to the other side and see how cheap you can buy Northstar Caddies. The people buying them because they see a luxury car at econobox prices have no idea what they may be in for regarding the cost to drive and maintain one of these much less if something fails (and it usually will as these cars get older.)

For you it may be "insane". For others, spending money on premium is "insane". It's all relative.

But the price difference between premun versus unleaded isnt a great of a gap as between race fuel and premium.

Yeah that is true. Not just the LS but the navigator and many other nice vehicles.

But the difference in the way the car performs is totally worth it..

I dont think our cars can benefit from anything higher than 93...other cars yes.

Higher octance isnt always better.

100 octane really isn't race fuel, but eh. To me, race fuel is low octane AVGas.

Correct. but performance aside, me running 91 or 93 is like some of these guys running 89 in their LS's. In the end, it's just not worth it to me to run lower octane than what the motor needs.

Again, it's all relative. I can afford 250-300 dollars in gas per month. As such, i will buy the "best" octane I need and can afford.

Black calls it "insane". I call it the price I have to pay for what I choose to drive. It's really that simple, in the end.

I call it that because i pay that much a month to my credit union.

Now i would put 100 octane into my 72 chevelle as im sure it will benefit.

Well if your car is tuned for it, it can provide more timing and thus more power..

How much 1hp??

You honestly think its worth $200 extra a month for whatever minimal power gain??

Lets see some dynos showing real performance then i will believe it.

I would say more in the neighborhood of 5-10. And, yes, you can feel 5 hp.

I know that but i would need better results than that to justify the price.

Thanks to quik for posting the real story. Any detonation will result in timing being pulled back from advance, which will lower your power and result in a less efficient operation. So you lose money instead of saving it. Meanwhile, you'd best hope that the knock sensors are working, or you end up as frogman pointed out, with a blown engine.

LOL...those are some nice calculations...ofcourse where I'm at the difference between regular and premo averages $.30 per gallon which doubles your initial cost calculation. If you can't afford to drive it..don't buy it.

If you can't afford to drive it..don't buy it.

Just like the cost of owning one.. If you beat it, it breaks, and costs an arm and a leg to fix; don't b!tch about the car being a POS.. Sh!t happens faster when your beating on things and this vehicle's parts aren't cheap.. :)

This question has come up time and time again so I'm not going to read the responses because I'm 99% sure I already know what they say. Let me just state that NO YOU CAN NOT PUT CHEAP GAS IN YOUR LS. If you bought the LS as a budget minded vehicle you bought the wrong car. Promptly go trade it in for a beater Toyota Corolla and you can put all the cheap gas in it you want.
