Notes for anyone doing something like this.
1. don't skimp. Meaning get a nice processor... preferably something that uses low wattage.
2. get a decent dc-dc regulator. Something that will handle 250watts.

Dash Install is pretty easy. Wiring is pretty simple. Onto the pics.

Ill get daytime pics soon. Gman saw it and his compliment means a lot as he's done several double-din installs.

Has bluetooth, wifi, usb plug in dash ( I'll get a pic ) and video out in dash also. Haven't bought the GPS antenna or the radio USB dongle but that will come soon.

Yes, I tether with my phone via bluetooth and I also have a wifi card in it for hotspots. The tether via bluetooth is very easy, it syncs on it's own. You can also tether via wifi (via wifirouter for windows mobile ) on wifi/android/ and iphone's. Nearly any smart phone can tether now days.

I also put in a USB plug in the dash along with RCA connectors to run video out from my phone and to plug in devices for file copy/tethering etc. Tethering over USB is much faster than bluetooth or wifi.

The computer I have is a c7 proc. It's basically an atom processor. It uses only 25watts which is the point. I am limited by the M2-ATX dc-dc regulator which is 150watts max. Right now the computer and the monitor runs off the same power supply so I can't add tons more devices. The point I'm making is that as far as the computer is concerned you are only limited by the power supply. If you spend 150$ on a 500watt dc-dc regulator then you can run a HUGE computer.

I'm running off a 120gig laptop drive. They run around 50$ but if you get a large power supply you can run large drives. SSD's are not really necessary.

You guys need to check out mp3car.com. There is also OBDII software and some people go as far as running their windows/ electronics via the headunit (it's pretty advanced stuff though)

I wouldn't say a Via C7 has that much in common with an Intel Atom, the C7 came out in 05 on 90nm and is essentially an updated C3. The Atom is a 2008 45nm BGA design... Either can be a good choice for a low power system.

My AMD/WinXP/Liliput/M2ATX system is sitting pretty much unused since I just use my HTC Magic, and when I get my Galaxy S or HTC Evo, I'll probably pull it out of the car completely. Was thinking about a tablet, but the newer 4" class smartphones are pretty appealing.

I wanted a carputer for the media capabilites and the web, but what I really wanted was OBD-II info and tuning to be built-in. I have a problematic Gen 1 for now, that's what lead me away. I am inspired by you going through with this regardless of the different equipment choices I'd have used. However, I won't bother with this kind of project until I can afford to make it what I really want in my soon to be Gen 2.
