I guess it was one of those "happens-in-threes" days for my car.

Friday I leave work and get on the highway. About two miles down the road the 'Check Engine Temp' 'Reduced Engine Power' messages pop up and I look at the gauge and it's maxed out!! I pull over on the side of the road and shut it down. I only sit there about two minutes and the car had cooled back to the half way point. I'm thinking the thermostat was stuck shut and it finally opened. :confused:

I get home and check everything out and all is good on water level etc. Well I decide to clean the car out while I'm out there. I get to the back seat and the center section armrest is down from my 7 year old daughter sitting back there. I lift the arm rest up and there is totally half dried sticky choclate milk all over underneath there from the night before. Man, that pissed me off so I clean that all off with warm water and leather cleaner.

I rolled the windows down to let it air out after cleaning the interior up. I go back out a bit later to roll the windows back up and can you guess what happened? The right rear window regulator snaps half way up and the window falls back into the door! UNBELIEAVABLE! :mad:
Thankfully I had another one on my shelf so I was able to replace that too while I was out there. I just love those days........:Bang

thats def a sh*tty day, but it can never just be one thing.
 
If the thermostat had stuck, it is unlikely that it would cool down that much in two minutes. It is more likely that your water temperature was okay (half way mark) and that the PCM commanded the cluster to move the gauge all the way to "H" because on a head over-temperature. This was probably due to an air pocket in the cooling system. The air pocket was probably due to some cracked plastic somewhere. The degas bottle is a good place to start looking.
 
Yes, I will do some more searching. That was my guess since it cooled down so quick. Interestingly though I have not seen any water leaks and the water wasn't very low at all, maybe 1 quart.

You've got a leak or several leaks then. It should take several years of normal evaporation before you need to add a quart.
 
I'll definitely keep an eye on it. It hasn't done that before and so far hasn't again.
 
That sucks. I haven't had one of those in a while. Hope I dont jinx it either
 
Mine will do what I call a phantom overheat. It will suddenly overheat over the course of a few moments. Turning the heater on drops the temp quickly. When this happend I top off the coolant at the engine fill cap (not the degas bottle). It will be about 1.5 cups low. If I top that off I am good for another 6 months usually. Sometimes I have to bleed the system though.

It's not a "phantom" overheat, it's real. If you do this enough times, you will damage the headgaskets and the heads.

Probably your degas bottle and/or plastic cooling system parts at the front of the engine are cracked.
