Im sry to ask somethin that has been asked befor but i dont really have the time to sit and read through everything i can because im getting out of the Army so i have little time to do alot.

the Mark VIII i have (ill get pictures) runs rather well for 114k the paint is great the underbody could use some work etc, my only problem is it has a funny shutter when lightly pressing the throttle(from a dead stop, 30mph,45mph and sometimes on CC) the CEL came on and said it was the Crank PS so i changed that and it didnt help much the only time i saw it go away for about 8 hours was when i changed the plugs and gapped them correctly, also the trans shifts funny some times. at times its dead on and grabs great from 25-35 mphs like it should, sometimes it lags on the DS and the slips all the way to red line.

i was thinking coils and injecters since the fuel filter i changed was so clogged i couldn't even get 30psi of air through it (but the pump is still runing good)and maybe and trans filter change i bought it at 90K and had the fluid flushed when i got to el paso, since i can slam on it and the car hauls its just after rolling around during normal days it starts after about 2 hours of use every few days.

any kind of information would be great. cuz its gotta pull my benz back to wisconsin in a month on a trailer with a brake system.
 
Usually the trq convertor shudders and if its doin wut u say the TC sounds like is bad but idk I've never had a TC go out on me so hope u figure out wut it is
 
Probably spark related. The injectors are built like tanks and rarely fail. I would start with new plugs and boots. Boots are about $2 each. So for under $50 you will have new plugs and boots. Coils themselves can go bad, but more often than not its a boot.
 
Do a mother flush idk if u did it urself or a shop did but flush it urself clean the magnet new filter and make sure u drain the TC and slap a external trans cooler on sounds like fluid is getting to hot

its feels like a shudder but it could be a miss, and to help with a better understanding im not gonna lie i drive the car the way i see it was ment to be used. im not talkin fish tails etc but i do get on it alot just cuz i love the way it feels and idk thats how i drive (but i dont speed :shifty:) im in el paso so thats about 4100-5300 feet up depending on where u are and on normal driving useing the freeway a 1/3 of the time i can pull 15.3-16.8 mpg and my dads lsc in wisconsin gets about 18 around town where the streets are useually 35mph and up. also i did see somewhere on here about the two rubber vac lines on the ds of the intake mani causing leaks they do look a tad cracked and befor i bought new ones i was gonna wrap it with tape to see it that helped.

the TC works lol i now that i havent had a problem with it but i can understand what u mean by that causing the computer to shut off the spark.

with driving it hard more often then not if it ended up being the converter or the trans all togather what would be the best way to get either a used one or rebuild it with a performance aspect(3.53 etc) it also has a race DS since my little brother befor i bought it from my dad shredded it doin burn outs cuz hes a dumb ass.

dumb question but im a manual trans guy every car ive owned was stick but from working on trucks in the army :D to drain the TC id have to drop the trans wouldnt i :confused:

There is a drain plug on the TC there is a tab on the bell housing pull that off rotate engine until the 12mm I believe bolt is point down and drain it go get parts fluid trans cooler houses etc and learn how to j-mod might as well since ur that deep into it
 
First off, and I dont mean to be rude, but please learn how to type. Your posts are very difficult to read and understand. From what I can gather from your posts, its seems your vehicle has had a very hard life. I would say that it was not maintained very well. Your problem is definately in the trans. More than likely, the trans fluid was never changed until you had it flushed. OF course the new detergents start cleaning your trans and you start having shifting/shudder problems.

You can do one of 2 things. Drop the pan and clean it out/change the screen, then do another flush. If you decide on this route, use some lucas or Seafoam trans additive. Or, have the trans rebuilt and install a new torque converter. Use Mercon V or another compatible synthetic trans fluid. Good luck.

Well since they can feel like one in the same. And since I has this exact same experience. But clearly you know more about Marks than I. So by all means, continue and I will bow out of your sandbox.
 
Well i have called around and explained what the trans is doing to a few shops here in hell paso tx. they said it seems like having the trans flushed is what started the failure its having now. so it needs a rebuild and i plan on doing it myself( any advice would help manuals etc.)

to the miss firing its not i have a xpiped magna flow cat back with my stereo off u can hear it clear as day.

so I will be sadly doing a rebuild on something ive never touched because time and money are short very short and i have no other choice because in a month it needs to pull a 2800 pound car back to milwaukee wisconsin. So minus what im reading about the 4R70W on a different website if anyone has a manual in a file they could send me anything would help. I'm well off on mechanical understanding so i dont see it being a problem just kind hard to rebuild somethin ive never worked on in my life.

I wasn't asking out of being a d!ck just I didn't catch the question is all then wen I realized about slipping of gear it sounds like trans since a missfire wont make ur trans slip I'm sure all of us know that......And for ur problem pearl98 it be cheaper to find a 98- trans used stick it in and go and then learn to rebuild on the old one if u need it that soon hit a salvage yard and pull one here in Cali a trans goes for 115-150$ but I'm not sure about ur area
 
I can get the trans for $100, and as long as you use your wires from the 98, couldn't he use any trans from a Mark?
 
1sik32v~ i think i will probably do that and keep this one to build the "bullet proof" off the tccoa website and put all the goodies (j-mod of course) in it just to have them, i figure by doing that weather i build the engine and diff or not i wont blow the trans up.

how much u think it would cost to ship it from cali to el paso cuz the junk yards here are kinda heartless on prices. i spent 45 dollars on the stock amp when i really should have just cut the amp out all togathe my alpine puts out plenty of power for the speaker system but o well
 
About the same to get it at ur junk yard so figure 120 for the trans then shipping is goin to be nuts I remember shipping sohc heads and those were 50lbs each and cost me 90$ so double it for the weight of the trans which is about 200-230 lbs..... so go get it at ur yard bro I don't think a trans is 350 there for u can go on eBay and maybe find one for the same price
 
They have one here that ive got parts off of alot and its a 98 with 89745 miles on it cuz the DEA puts tags on what cars they strip( :D who would have guessed a Drug car in el paso haha) anywho the trans dipstick tube was pulled off but the fluid is nice and cherry so im going to pull the pan off before i buy it to check and see whats in side (metallic, sand, etc) if i think its good i guess ill have to buy it only thing is it 350 with the core. and if i wanna build my old one to be "bullet proof" ill swallow the core charge. j-mod, 5.4l trans parts etc :D
 
well idk who or what the frogman is but not to be rude if u only got a few hundred dollars to play with a paycheck and no where near enough to have it rebuilt then your at the point i am which would be why i have asked these questions so i can hopefully get somethin that works tell i have the time and money to fix up a different one. 1900 miles on half shot foreword clutch pack isnt a good idea last time i checked
 
Hey, I took Unity's advise and the boots were shot, changed those and found some rust on the boot of number 4. So I'm thinking the back pressure to cause that would be the cats are clogged that bad. I dont have a welder so flex tube and the cut off flanges will have to do tell i can get some junk yard cats to make into fake cats(for state inspection). Then take my red neck exhaust and have mandrel bent pipes made when i get the money.

Thanks for the help guys, any other thoughts on "tuning up" the engine. Its got 4 month old plugs, the boots, a new air filter, and soon lol a full x-pipe exhaust with two rez and magna flow mufflers. Not that i haven't built engines but, I've been a 4 banger guy(mostly honda's) and I changed ways when i got the Lincoln(back to high school when i could rebuild a 350 in my sleep stoned). Also found a junk parts car LSC I was thinkin about taken the diff and maybe the bags if they look good, any thoughts and that would be good to.

check post for broken modulator springs in the trans any high mileage viii will more than likely have broken mod springs. causing poor shifts and shudders .
