Shifter cable removal

Can someone certify how to remove the shifter cable end.. Does it have to be in the unlock position? Or do you get a screw driver behind it and pry? Because I tried putting a screw driver behind it and I put a fair amount of force on it and it didn't do anything.. I really don't want to break it.

Just pry on it between the shifter arm and the connector. It just pops off.

It popped off for you? What about getting it back on?

I put it on with my hand as far as I could then used slip joint pliers and put just enough pressure to click it in.. with the help of some WD-40 of course..
