Hey everyone, I recently bought an 05 LS V6 auto with 65k miles on it. I don't know if its ever had a tranny service done on it so I'd like to get the fluid changed and tranny filter changed out as well. I work at a quick lube and would like to do this myself so is there any write up on a tranny flush and filter change on here?

i believe it's a closed transmission. the service interval is at 150K miles for the V8. i don't know for V6, i'd imagine it's the same.

i'd get lincoln to do it.

i've got an 04 v8. the dealer told me 150K. i can't recall what the manual says now. so it must have changed in 05...

150 sounds extreme..I'd say change it every 60-75k unless your really hard on it.

My service manual says every 30K...

No, it doesn't. Re-read it.

I suspect that yours says something like this.

48,000 Km (30,000 Miles)
# Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid on all vehicles equipped with the TorqShift, 4R100, 4F50N or 4F27E transmissions. Inspect automatic transmission fluid level using the fluid level indicator on all other vehicles (if equipped with a fluid level indicator). Change the in-line service-installed transmission fluid filter (if equipped).

240,000 Km (150,000 Miles)
# Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid (except CVT transmission).
# Change automatic transaxle filter (except CVT, Five Hundred and Montego equipped with a 6-speed automatic transaxle).

Please note that the LS does not use the TorqShift, 4R100, 4F50N or 4F27E transmissions. It has the 5R55. That one is a 150K service interval. This may be going too far and maybe it should be done sooner, but don't claim that the service manual or service schedule says to do it at 30K, because it does not.

Ok got ya, I saw that but had no Idea what tranny I have. Well I'd still like to get it done since I have 65K on mine. I havn't owned an auto tranny for awhile so I'm a lil scared something will go wrong. It seems to shift hard from Reverse to Drive/vise-versa and sometimes from Park to Drive. Normal? Just Torque? Never owned an LS before so it makes me wonder. Also "# Change automatic transmission/transaxle fluid" meaning flush, or just drain and fill?

It means a full fluid exchange. I don't call those flushes, since nothing but fresh transmission fluid is used, no cleaners.

Now, for the bad news. You have a bad solenoid valve in the transmission. You should replace it as soon as you can. It adds stress and possible damage to the whole drive train. You can do it yourself, or I think the dealers do it for a little less than $700. I'd wait to do the fluid change at the same time, and since the pan will be off, get the filter changed.
(If you don't change the valve, it will just get worse and worse.)

Awwwwwwwwwesome! Well I'll probably take it to a local Tranny shop here in town then since today is my last day on my 30 Day warrenty from the dealer I bought it from... Always loved LS's but heard they have their share of probs, and thats why I stayed away from the V8 cause I heard they have more probs than the V6s but damnit.

From my limited experience, the V6s have more problems than the V8s (for gen II anyway).

I changed mine (05 V8) when I bought the car at 40k. It's really not that hard. Just remove the drain plug (big nut) and let all the fluid out. Once you have the plug in your hand you will see how to fill it back to the correct level. After it's drained remove the pan, change the filter and reinstall the pan. Install the whole drain plug assembly and then remove just the little center plug in it. You need to force fluid up into that center hole with a tool like this http://www.autozone.com/autozone/ac.../N-26dd?counter=10&itemIdentifier=405131_0_0_

When you have enough in there it will want to flow back out. Just wait until it slows to a drip and reinstall the center plug. The length that it protrudes up into the pan sets the fluid level automatically. The service manual linked on this site tells you exactly how to do it and what temperature to have the tranny warmed up to. You don't need all the fancy tools in the manual though.

I used my scangauge II to read the tranny fluid temp. The fluid in these trannys should last a good long time though. When I'm driving the temp hovers around 170-180ºF, which is a healthy temp for transmissions.

Well come to find out I actaully have a 3k mile/3month warranty from the dealer I bought the car from so I'm just taking it back to have them check out whether I have a tranny issue or not. Probably just have them change out the filter while the pan is off anyways. All in all Im happy with my car in the 4 weeks I've owned it. Hopefully it will treat me as well as I treat it.

to OP, when you hit the milestone, don't forget to change the fluid in the rear transaxle as well.

honestly, where i live, the dealer charges a little (and i mean little) more than firestone, and they know the cars. plus, they offer amazing shuttle service.

even if that is not the case where you are, i'd let the dealer take care of this one. it's an important, and expensive, part of your drivetrain.

mho.
