Homelink relation to sunroof?

My Sunroof has was not used much by the orig. owner and the car did sit for several months before I resuced her.

Upon my first attempt to open it it would only move a few inches back then stop. Press button again, moves 1/8 inch back and so on untill it found a "maximum" 3/4 open sticking point. So I fished around with a rag and some
WD-40 to get it as clean as I could and after some love it seems to open
and close with ease however, The tilt function takes several hits to get it up.

In doing this The motor never seemed to struggle or strain, just stop.

Seemed like a switch issue but after pulling the switch cover and unplugging and replugging it, no change there (no surprise).

I think I can rule out the switch due to it now opening and closing fine after cleaning and oiling.

I have tried several times to program my garage door opener to the home link
and no matter what slight variation I use it will not work.

Currently using these methods:
1.Hold two outter buttons untill fast flash. Release both then press right most
button while holding opener button at the same time untill flashing slows or stops.

2. same as above but not releasing the right most button after step one and holding the remote door opener 3-5 inches away untill slow flash stops.

NOTHING.

Is there a known suspect in this or should I give up?

I hate giving up on something mechanical but with electronics involved sometimes A man has to know when he is beat.

Remember WD-40 is a solvent, lube the tracks with white lithium grease or silicone grease.

Your garage opener maybe a rolling code, out of my 04 Owners Manual:

1. Press and hold the two outside
buttons releasing only when the red
light begins to flash after 20
seconds. Do not repeat step one to
program additional hand-held
transmitters to the remaining two
HomeLink buttons. This will erase
previously programmed hand-held
transmitter signals into HomeLink.
2. Position the end of your
hand-held transmitter 2–8 cm (1–3 inches) away from the HomeLink
button you wish to program (located on your visor) while keeping the
red light in view.
3. Simultaneously press and hold
both the HomeLink and hand-held
transmitter button. Do not release
the buttons until step 4 has been
completed.
Some entry gates and garage door
openers may require you to replace
step 3 with procedures noted in the
“Gate Operator and Canadian Programming” in this section for Canadian
residents.
4. The red light will flash slowly and then rapidly. Release both buttons
when the red light flashes rapidly. (The rapid flashing light indicates
acceptance of the hand-held transmitters’ radio frequency signals.)
5. Press and hold the just-trained HomeLink button and observe the red
light. If the light is a constant red, programming is complete and your
device should activate when the HomeLink button is pressed and
released. Note: To program the remaining two HomeLink buttons,
begin with step 2 in the “Programming” section — do not repeat step 1.
Note: If the red light blinks rapidly for two seconds and then turns to a
continuous red, proceed with steps 6 through 8 to complete
programming of a rolling code equipped device.
6. At the garage door opener receiver (motor-head unit) in the garage,
locate the “learn” or “smart” button (usually near where the hanging
antenna wire is attached to the unit).
7. Press and release the “learn” or “smart” button. (The name and color
of the button may vary by manufacturer.)
Note: There are 30 seconds in which to initiate step eight.
8. Return to the vehicle and firmly press, hold for two seconds and
release the HomeLink button. Repeat the press/hold/release sequence
again, and, depending on the brand of the garage door opener (or other
rolling code equipped device), repeat this sequence a third time to
complete the programming.
HomeLink should now activate your rolling code equipped device. To
program additional HomeLink buttons begin with step 2 in the
“Programming” section. For questions or comments, please contact

there is a safety feature that the motor will stop if there is too much resistance, like an arm through the sunroof

You are both correct.

HOWEVER, My garaged door isnt rolling code. Just regular old craftsman.

And the funny thing about the resistance feature is I don't think that was coming into effect at all.

No clicking from a relay or anything. I also was helping it open by hand and it didn't seem to matter to it at all. I could hear it strain if I pushed harder than it was wanting to move. (like forcing it open faster and with more force than it liked it would sound under a load more than allowing it to move on its own)

I maybe wrong on this but it seemed to just simply stop like the switch was released. Silence.

Does that change anything for you guys?

Your Craftsman opener would have to be very old to not be a rolling code one. Open the light cover and check else where on it to see it there are any set buttons to push.

This may help on the moon roof.

Roof Opening Panel Motor Initialization

NOTE: This procedure must be carried out when repairs (including lubrication) are performed on any part of the roof opening panel system.

Vehicles with existing roof opening panel and the glass in the slide range fore/aft

1. Turn the key to the ON position, then begin moving the glass panel using express open or express close.

2. While the glass panel is moving, press and hold the tilt switch for 10 seconds.

3. The glass stops as soon as the switch is pressed.

4. After 10 seconds, release the tilt switch. (Continue to step 9.)

Vehicles with existing roof opening panel and the glass in the closed or vent range

5. Press and hold the tilt switch.

6. The glass will move to full tilt position and stop, but do not release the tilt switch.

7. Continue holding the tilt switch for an additional 10 seconds. After 10 seconds, release the tilt switch. (Continue to step 8.)

Vehicles with new or existing roof opening panel and the glass in the slide, closed or vent range

8. Press and hold the tilt switch.

9. The glass panel is driven in the tilt up direction to the tilt up hard stop.

10. The drive recognizes a hard stop has occurred.

11. The drive reverses the glass panel to the normal tilt up soft stop position.

12. After the glass stops, release the tilt switch.

13. Within 5 seconds of releasing the tilt switch, press and hold the switch.

14. The drive moves through the full closed position to the full open position and back to full closed.

15. Test the express open and express close using the switch.

Just do step 1 to 5. It worked on my parents 90s Stanley opener, it should work for you Craftsman.

DOH! :facepalm

You got me. I DO have a rolling code opener! I forgot that my landlord replaced the old school craftsman about 3 months ago with a newer unit!

I saw the "Learn" button on it so ill give both the opener and the sunroof a try tonight!

My Catera has a similar reprogram technique for the sunroof express open that must be done everytime the battery is unhooked so maybe this is the case. The Catera will convince you it is possesed with randome open/close at all times untill it is programed.

UPDATE:

So after realizing I did have a rolling code garage opener it was simple to program the homelink. If you watch the flashes and proceed accordingly it
is a no brainer.

The sunroof however doesnt operate quite as described none the less it does function 100% A Ok after cycling it enough times and cleaning the slides.

I never could get it to go thru the "Hard stop, soft stop" programming but it opens in tilt fully without issue and slides all the way back on express now so I'm happy.

I'm one drivers side vent away from a 100% perfect bone stock, clean as new 165,000 mile 2000 LS! And I love it.
