Turned 130k yesterday, and lost a water pump.

Yesterday I turned over 130k miles on my v6 and right after she did smelled antifreeze. Luckily I was only a few miles from home and made it. Antifreeze all over the place. I'm 99% sure my water pump went. Fun stuff. This doesn't seem like a common problem on the v6 and it looks harder then the average water pump then I've done, but then again the whole cooling system on these cars are just weird. I'll be replacing the belt while I'm in there. I'm probably going to do a small write-up with pictures if I remember to do so.
 
Where is the water pump on there? I've only had to change one, and it was front and center. Almost too easy. I'd imagine, if it's like the other lincoln stuff, you'll have to do some stupid crap like remove a header or something lol.
 
It's an external water pump. I'm sure it looks much harder then it is, like most things on these cars they look really hard but once you've done it it ain't that bad.

I'd be surprised if the water pump is actually what leaked. For starters, just how does a water pump just burst open and start spraying coolant?

I'm betting on the short hose above it that is hidden and skips over straight back under the intake area. It's common and until you start digging, it's difficult to see it. From what I remember when I did my first LS' job on that hose, (at around 50K miles) it had a chafing problem and was in contact with something metallic under its bend. I wrapped an extra piece of sliced heater hose around that spot on mine.

You're exactly right. It's not the water pump it's the L shaped hose that goes from the water pump to the heads. It looks like the belt hit the hose because it appears to be leaking from the bottom of the hose. I don't have it off yet but it looks like a pretty easy fix. I'll post pictures once I get it out.
 
damn, looks like a dealer hose.

hmmmm...previous owner swap it out for a cheap replacement maybe? looks like the short end is 'custom'. i bet its possible to find the right size hose with a bend like that cheaper than a vehicle specific hose and if done correctly, would work with some trimming
 
the clamp closest to the short end is a factory/stock clamp. you can tell by the impressions on the hose they were different. the shiny one may say ford on it but i wouldn't think a large, reputable, respectable car manufacturer like ford would use a clamp like that:D

Yeah, I didn't look at the picture really good. I see now that the spring clamp is at the short end, and that the worm clamp moved from the long end to the short end. At first, I thought there were two clamps at the short end and one at the long end. While worm clamps have some short comings when it comes the reliability, the real reason that the factory doesn't use them is that they take too much time/labor to install.
 
After reading that part about the hose rubbing and starting to leak, I went out and with a flashlight took a good look at things under the intake. I saw the same type of worm gear hose clamp on the long end, that connects to pump. Every other type was the spring clamp style. So is this a factory setup with the lower clamp?
 
I think that worn gear hose clamp is stock, they must have had an issue with it coming off.

Wow, that is unexpected, but I agree that the odds are now in favor of the worm gear clamp being factory.
 
That was my finding when I did mine. My theory is that there is no good access to the area where that clamp goes, to use the spring style clamp.
