I have noticed a puff of smoke when I first punch the throtle on my 3.9, not much and any one else probably wouldn't even notice it or just think it was dust from the turn downs. I was wondering what are some things that could cause this, Im hope'n that the air filter is just stopped up and its pulling oil.
I have my home built cai and no mufflers those are the only two things I have done.

I am assuming that the smoke is bluish.

Sorry, a clogged air filter is not one of the possible causes.
Things that it could be...

Valve stem seals leaking.
Rings worn out or ring(s) failing.

Year and miles?

What color would you say the smoke is? White, grey, bluish? Does this happen when you first start the car? Specifically, is the exhaust system still cool at the time?

2001 140,000 miles

Did you remove you catalytic converters? With the converters on, small amounts on oil burning won't be seen. With them off, it will be.

Blue = oil.
White = coolant, usually due to a head or head gasket issue. The LS V8s don't seem to have this come up.
Black = mixture too rich.

+1, that is exactly where I was going with it.

Mine puffed blue smoke when I punched it.. It turned out to be the VCGs.. And the one plug loose let the oil into the cylinder.. Highly doubt that's your problem because it was a mistake that it was loose but just thought I would through that out there..
