I am thinking about purchasing an LS v8. Ideally, I would want a 2003 or newer. This doesnt mean I wouldnt consider a 2002 and older if the price was right. I was wondering what you guys think of this car. It appears to need a timing chain but I am thinking maybe a chain tensioner. I would do my own work of course. I rebuilt the engine in a 93 SHO a couple years back that I owned and learned a lot.

I want to sell my 98 Mark VIII for something newer and maybe more fun to drive. Any thoughts?

Thanks for the reply. I wasnt sure exactly what I should expect for a price on something like this. A few weeks ago, I saw an 03 LS v8 for $3995. It had 130,000 miles. I should have looked at it but I didnt. It was pretty decent looking too.

Maybe I should hold out for an 03

Good to see you going for the change.

About the car. My take on it, overall the car looks clean, but I think for a $1000 more you could buy one fully functional.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing. Although it does have some nice chrome rims. I am sure those are worth almost $1000 right there. Is there really much difference in performance between the 01 and the 03 model? I mean, 30 horse should make some difference. Shouldnt it?

Yeah. There ar some gains and some losses. Gen1 get more gains from performance mods like exhaust and intake compared to 03+ becase 03+ were improved a lot and left little room for improvements by adding exhaust to it. You might find an 03+ with warranty on it and it'll come in handy when coils fail. 00-02 start in 2nd gear while 03+ start in 1st. Just to name a few things

Thats only when in the SST mode that the sport models have. They all start in first in D4 or D5.

Only SST? Well I learned something. Thanks. Well you can get rid of it with a tune if you go with one with SST

Problems, problems

You are looking at some serious problems with the 01. Think Hydraulic Fan! Big bucks to fix it. I have an 01 which has been a money pit from the start. Love the car but holy crap, so many things have failed on it. Tranny too! So I would look for something newer 03-06 after they cleaned up some of the problems.

My 02 has been great. I think most Gen1 problems were worked out by then. Gen2s have there own issues but I don't think to many.
