Bridgestone Blizzaks question...

Do I need to put 4 on or can I get away with only buying 2 to put on the car for the winter time? I have a 2005 LS V8 Sport (235/50/17). I found someone locally selling 2 for $70.00 and 90% tread on them but the tire size is 235/60/17, which would mean the tire would have more sidewall but should fit correct? I also need to purchase 4 allseason tires as my current ones are bald and I am due for state inspection.

My dad has a winter set for his crown Vic, and they are amazing tires, they aren't good when it warms up for handling but in the winter they're great
 
Well Pittsburgh winters get pretty bad (lots of snow and ice) and my house is at the top of a nice steep hill. I don't understand why I would need all 4 if it is a RWD car?
 
probably for handlig purpose's...it does drive weird on dry pavement, but mine were on seperate wheels, so I just changed them out before a storm..it only snows like 3 times all winter here
 
If the only thing you do with your car is accelerate in a straight line, and never turn or stop then yes only buy 2 winter tires...
 
Two will be fine. Plenty of 2WD trucks only change the rear tires. If your fronts have tread then for sure only 2 will work fine.
 
I'm going to go with kk on this one. You want to have the same tires at all 4 corners. At least that's ideal.

If you can't afford all 4, the rears are better than NO snow tires for sure.
 
Oh, and f*ck Blizzaks. WAY too overpriced. Get Winterforce instead. I got mine on my 17's for about 125 each.
 
I would suggest getting Winterforce tires like Pektel said. For your money you can order four tires for the price of just two blizzaks. Blizzaks are overpriced and very comparable to Winterforces. Do some reading on tirerack and get 225/55/17...narrower tires are better for snow
 
Two is worse than none imo.... it will allow your car to accelerate faster than it can stop... not good at all....
 
For the record, I have 2 winterforce tires. not 4. The difference was nothing short of spectacular after getting them on. I have not encountered any situation that would cause me to believe it's unsafe.

I do think that it would be BETTER for me to get winterforce on the fronts too, but the 2 have suited me quite well.

I also am from the land of 6 month winters, so I've had plenty of experience on the crappy winter roads in the 14 years I've been driving. Maybe that has a part to play in it too. I know how to drive on winter roads.

yes you are..lol

as an ex OTR truck driver...I've had my share of winter driving too...ran two on my car last year and I was fine. If you are gonna drive so fast in the snow that you have to worry about stopping and turning, driving is prolly not the best thing for you to do..lol


even when we chain up big trucks...(we don't run winter tires either) we chain drives, and maybe a set of drags on the trailer...nothing on the steers.
 
I used to run a set of blizzaks on the rear of my 5.0L Mustang all winter and would leave the factory tires on the front. Traction was the main enemy of that car and the tires made the car totally drivable in a Canadian winter. I was a poor University student at the time so I did not want to put tires on the front. I drove that way for a few winters until one year I almost could not avoid an accident at slow speed in a parking lot. At the point I put two more on the front, ironically purchased in the USA on one of my trips as tires are much cheaper in your Country. Needless to say I would never drive again unless I had all 4 tires. I always buy the best tires for the climate and don't worry about price. The difference between an accident and a miss can only be a couple of meters! Nokian R's are on my baby.
 
So I purchased 4 allseasons yesterday; Sumitumo Touring LS-V's. They had good treadwear, traction, and temperature ratings and are V rated; also came with a 70,000mile warranty which will never happen in Pittsburgh. They happened to have Blizzaks on display while I was there and so I asked if I needed 2 or 4; he told me I could get away with 2 but 4 are recommended and not to be surprised if a law is passed next year requiring 4 snow tires on all vehicles. I asked why 4 on a RWD vehicle and he said it wasn't necessarily issues as far as handling but the issue with only running 2 Blizzaks is stopping. He says that you stop on the dime even on ice and if running only 2 Blizzaks, the rear would instantly stop but the front end would not, causing the front end to swing left or right.
