so i was driving on the interstate going to a relatives house, was doing about 80 on cruise. All of a sudden the car down shifted for no reason really hard. Thought that was weird. About a minute later the car started reving up to about 5k, and i took it out of cruise and it was just coasting but when i would hit the gas it would just rev freely. Pulled to the side of the road, ran through all the gears and nothing would engage. Turned it off for a minute and started back up and made it up about amile to the next exit and it did it again. So what do i do? New tranny? This sucks.

sounds like it might be an electronic issue. its completely a guess though.

more about the car please

Has it done it again? what year? engine? any mods?

I didnt try driving the car after i got it off the interstate, i got it towed to my auto guy this morning and hes digging into it. Its a 2001 V8 non-sport. ive only done a kkm filter adapter and flowmaster exhaust as far as "performance mods", so the mods are very minimum at best. the car was drving just fine before this too so i had no sign that anything would happen, i just had my fluid checked right before last winter so i dont really see that being a problem unless they lied by telling me it didnt need flushed or topped off. i will definatley keep you guys posted as i get new information in the next day or so. right now im just crossing my fingers in hopes it wont blow my wallet up. please keep me in you prayers, haha.... but really.

Looks like its the tranny man. Mine did similar stuff. In D5 it wouldnt move. Reverse would not engage properly. I had to floor it to get it moving. In manual mode it would shift but hard. Would not go into the first gear, only 2,3,4 and 5th.

I would start lookin for a good used tranny. I got mine for 900 installed. Works. Smoother than the original one.

How many miles you have there? I had 154000 when mine got messed up.

i have 110,000 miles on it. he just called me this morning and asked me if there was a diffrent place to jump it other then the trunk, im sure there is i just didnt know. he said the car was dead when it got dropped off. so maybe a bad alternator and dieing battery could be giving me these problems? i dont know he siad he would check all that stuff. but my problems seem very similar to your so im just expecting the worst.

A dead battery will cause all kinds of weird problems. The trunk is the only place to jump the battery. No under-hood points.

I had plenty of dead bats cause some douche dropped in the wrong one ( long story, posted it before:rolleyes: ) . I never had this problem. I would say drive shaft or trans.

You could tac it up and not move right?

Yea i reved it up plenty of times and didnt move an inch.
I have another question too, ive been looking on ebay for transmissions (just kinda checking around for prices and getting myself ready to fork over some big bucks) anyway i was wondering would a gen2 trans. work for a gen1? i see alot of gen2 trans on ebay and was just checking.

The trannys differ in years and production dates. Few different trannys came on this cars. There was some kind of chart showing the differences. I dont remember where us it. If you search you will probably find it.

There is another jump point, believe it or not. Take off the passenger front wheel, and the whee well liner closest to the firewall. You'll see the red plastic cap.

Just saw it a couple weeks ago, when changing out the pass side wheel bearing. I had to remove that liner for hooking up the abs sensor wire.

It's a power junction. It wasn't intended as a jump start point. It is better/safer to jump from the battery in the trunk. It certainly seems easier to open the trunk and lift the floor than to remove a wheel and liner.

I agree it woudl be easier/better/safer. I have no idea why one could not get into the trunk, although I have read threads on here where people have had trouble with a completely dead system, and not being able to open their trunk. I would think that using the key to open the trunk would only be a mechanical process, but maybe not?

It is a mechanical only process. I even tried it with the battery disconnected after one crazy debate on it.

If your key works in the truck lock with the battery in, it will also work when the battery is dead.

correct me if im wrong, but there is another spot to jump, passenger side wheel well, also my rpms jumped like that one time when did some stupid shifting and the transmission light came on, but it was the coil issue, fixed that and havent had the same issue.

the reason i asked is because my mechanic didnt want to take out my 2 12s and a few other tools that i had in there. just seeing if there was an easier way. it doesnt look like there is.

It's probably too late now...

If you don't mind waiting an hour or two, you can probably recharge the battery enough to start it by using one of those cigarette lighter (or power point) to cigarette lighter cables.

yea im sure hes already got it up and running. it was yesterday that he called. havent heard anymore news from him yet though.

my mechanic called me a little bit ago, lokks like mys trans. is gone. he said he opened it up and all the fluid is black and smells really bad. he said he turned it on and the pump whines like it got fried or something. he said the cheapest place he could find that would rebuild it is the next city and wants $1300. im not sure on what to do here. im hesitant to buy a used one and then have it showing up and it also needing work. im sure some of you guys have gone through this, whats a good price and what would you do.

When my transmission went bad, I lucked out and got my used transmission from eBay for $50. I drove 5 hrs to pick it up and saved the $450 he was charging for shipping.
