Exhaust emmisons question

Any (preferably in Ont, which isn't likely, lol) get rid the of the third big cat on a 1st gen have any trouble passing emmisions testing?
I'm thinking of getting rid of mine, and replacing everything from the front cats back...

find a place that doesn't do the visual to get tested. around here theres a shop that will test for $20 and all they do is put the sniffer's on, as long as it passes that they notify the dmv and you're good to go. make sure your o2 sensors are good though, mine were shot and i failed...i was over double the limits on the readings.
 
Tests are standard $35 any where up here. No visuals really up here. They don't even put the Marks on the dynos here due to the air suspension, just stick the sniffer in the pipe. They look for codes etc on OBDII etc but I don't need to worry about that with my earlier 1st gen.

Last couple tests I've done it passed with extremely low readings, so I'm hoping it still will pass even with the third cat gone, not sure if I want to find out the hard way though, so thought I'd ask here :)
 
i did the same thing on my 97 tbird 4.6L but i etested it first...so i cannot give you a proper answer...id send it and see what happens, most garages dont even do a visual inspection anymore
 
They don't look under the car up here on OBD1 stuff really, I just need to know if it will pass the sniffer test.
 
the third cat is a NOX scrubber...you will fail for NOX if you remove it and they sniff your tailpipe.

quit asking, dump the $36 and find out....its the only true way you will figure it out...and if it fails, go buy a couple 3 way univeral fit and have them welded in then you for sure will pass...simple enough...

a few years ago NOX wasn't a failure point in emissions testing

..and you could take all the cats off the car and "lean it the F out" and it'd pass with flying colors.

Problem is.. NOW, Nox is a failure point in testing and lean fuel mixtures increase NOX emissions.

So long gone are the days of running the car at 20:1AF and passing the hydrocarbon test while the NOX was off the scale.

as time goes on, NOX requirements are gonna be more and more of an issue.

So the short simple answer, that best serves the community as a whole and best addresses the 2009-2010 years.. is

NO.. you cannot take of the third cat.

Also..there are cars that go VERY VERY FAST thru cats

Go ahead.. hack the NOX scrubber off your car and come back and tell us how that works for you.

You might got away with it yesterday, you might get away with it tomorrow.. but..it's only a matter of time.

I wasn't trying to say your op was BS, I was just wondering your reasoning behind the answer as you stated in the last two posts :)

I was thinking of (and am not going to try now,) of getting rid of the mufflers at the rear and running straight pipes there so I might have room for air tanks. I'd then run a mid-mount muffler where the third cat was. Looks like it might be a bad idea though...
 
You could probably get away with two 3 way high flow cats ahead of a muffler mounted a mid-ship..then straight pipe the rear.

It's hit or miss if the hiflow cats pass though, same deal as above...

If I were you, since the mark 8 exhaust comes off the car SO easily...
just keep the stock system and put it back on for inspection.

swapping exhaust is a 30 minute job, it literally falls off the car.

If your looking for space..

open your trunk and look in the 1/4 panel area, ahead of the wheel well.

you could stash some pretty large bottles in that unused area
 
True, I never thought of keeping the stock stuff somewhere (just need to figure out where ;) )
