when i go to the gas station and try to fill up the pump will just stop prematurely. i'm sure it's not the gas station because i have used different pumps and different gas stations and it has happened there as well. it doesn't do it all the time but i have noticed it doing a little more frequently as of late. has anyone had this happen to them before? what i do is i just kind of rotate the pump hose upwards and it will usually work. most of the time it is a PITA though putting like 4 bucks at a time, lol. sometimes i won't even know when i'm full and i will just keep pumping. luckily i have not over-filled as of yet. anyway, if anyone knows what this might be please, please tell me how to fix it.
 
It isn't your fault, as it has happended to me before at the stations that I go to as well. I have found that it happens more when the weather changes around where I am, but it is the stations problem, nothing to do with the car. My mom has had the same thing happen to her as well.
 
what do you mean, like when you put in 10 bucks and the gas handle wont pump more then 2 cents at a time? so your sitting there for like 20 minutes playing with the lever getting your moneys worth in gas, happened to me tonight, i was pissed, but atleast i was pumping super into a LS :)
 
The pump (the actual electric pump you don't see in the unit) is vapor locking. Stop the pump for 15 seconds, and try it again. Sometimes a "reset" (hang pump, re-start transaction) works better.

And the reason the pump isn't stopping on it's own when the tank is full, is because of the auto shut off pump handle design. If you understand how it works, you'll understand the vacuum mechanism doesn't work upside down.
 
I found leaving the car running while filling up works amazing, no lockups mid fill that last 3 tanks :D

Although I ALWAYS use the slowest setting on the pump

yeah, ive hung it up before and it ends the transaction, i had to go back into the store, but yesteday i just messing with it until it reached 10 haha, but i did get the gas into the car

The good people that run the sate of NJ ( sarcasm to the fullest degree ) believe the gas there is not flammable, considering you must leave it running in the sh*t hole.
 
i only seem to have this problem when i have the nozzel of full blast, back it down a notch or two and problem solved.

it's random. sometimes i'll be able to put a full 10 bucks in and it'll stop. then it will stop after like 5 bucks or so. it's pretty random. sometimes it just doesn't happen at all. it usually takes about $45 to fill up so it can become a PITA for sure.

thanks a lot for that great advise. i will definitely try this next time. when yo u say re-start the transaction you mean just end the current charge and start over correct? i want to make sure i'm getting it right.

in all honesty that is something i will not do. i rather keep pumping 5 bucks at a time than fill up a car while it's running.

the pumps around here do not have different dispense settings, unless i'm a total tard and haven't seen it.

He means don't pull the lever (in the handle of the nozzle) all the way in.


This problem could be caused by two things.
1. A restriction in the fill hose of the car. The hose/tube could be mashed in somewhere, or the anti-rollover valve could be sticking closed.
2. A restriction in the gas tank fill vent. This might be the issue if it fills okay with the engine running. (I think that the car selects a different vent path in that case.)
