Makes sense to me. If the MLPS is the old style water may how gotten inside. Thats all I can think of.
 
Manual Lever Postion Sensor, aka Neutral Safety Switch. Located on the drivers side of the transmission.
 
That happened to me on my first mark viii. We figured out that was the issue after a while. The MLPS goes out on some of these cars after a while, too. Makes you think your trans. is messed up but it's just a $75 part.

would a worn MLPS cause some hesitation between shifts after coasting to a stop then taking off. don't know how to explain it that well
