if you replace a caliper on one side, do you have to replace the other side too? i just read the car may pull to the side replaced,???

im going to be replacing my caliper tomorrow because the brake pad is loose, i figured it was the pistons because when i took the caliper off, only one piston was half pushed out, the other one was stuck in, i put a piece of wood between the pushed out piston and pumped the brakes to even out the 2 pistons, when they were even i put them back on the pads, i dont know what happened, but its like the same piston lost the pressure and retracted all the way back in, when i press on the brake it takes a couple pumps to get the piston fully out, ... so this is a bad caliper? thanks for any advice
 
No, but with a condition.
As long as the non-replaced caliper is functioning correctly, there is no need to replace it and the car will not pull to one side or the other.
In general practice, calipers are often replaced in pairs because:
1. If one is bad, the other may be close to failing itself.
2. Parts and repair places make more money this way.

I would, however, replace the pads on both sides. As it is now, they have uneven wear (due to the faulty caliper), and that will cause the braking forces to be somewhat uneven.

Lastly, yes for the third or so time, you have a bad caliper.

I would add, if you replace the rotor on one side I would replace the rotor on the other side for all the reasons stated above for replacing brake pads and caliper.
 
YAY!!! im in a good mood, i took the caliper off again, and i REALIZED that the bottom PIN on the caliper bracket was stuck, after some hitting it with a screw driver and hammer, i got the pin out, and there was NO grease at all :( luckily i had another caliper bracket that still had 2 pins in it! i greased them and switched both pins, everything is normal again, haha THANK GOD! brake pad isnt wiggly anymore! im sure i still have to bed it in though because of the minor uneven wear

Didn't want to start a new thread, but I replaced my brake pads last night with some full ceramics from Duralast. I've read ceramic doesn't produce the brake dust and is quieter. My pads were getting to where it sounded like a chalk board screeching.

Squeal is gone and they work good though I haven't laid on them hard to see if they grip any better.

I've been using those pads for well over a year. I have been very satisfied. VERY little dust and they grip very well!
