A/C Clutch

Is there is a way to gut the A/C clutch so its just a free spinning pulley? Mine froze on me, I got it free with some PB blaster (stupidly) and now it gets hot and smokes like something is rubbing in there. I bought a delete pulley, but I'm not smart enough and/or have the right tools to get the old A/C out.
 
You don't want a/c?

I would get a new compressor. But they are not cheap:(

I dont know about the delete pulley kits.

A 10mm SOCKET takes the compressor off.
The AC delete pulley bolts to where the AC compressor WAS.

it's not rocket science.

be forewarned, without AC your defrost wont work.
 
Go to a shop and get the system discharged first if you really want it gone, you will also need a saw or the disconnect tools.
 
You need the ac for your defrost to work right.
You live in WI.
You will want the defrost to work wont you ?
 
while i totally agree A/c makes the defroster work much better,especialy in humid weather, lets remember cars had defrost and didnt have a/c for many years,in the winter all you need is heat coming out of your vents,not a/c "dried" air.
i owned many cars that didnt have a/c installed ,they still had defrost,it just sucked when it was a warm muggy rainy night and you had to sweat yourself out using excess heat to defrost the windshield.
 
My options are kinda limited. I need the car to run and I cant afford to take it in right now. At this point it doesnt much matter if the defrost works, didnt work very well to begin with. Obama didnt give me a big enough raise to afford A/C.
 
Remove your compressor and get the tool for the lines, don't cut them. Put in your delete pulley. Save your obama bucks and get a new compressor when you can.

As kk said above, get it professionally evacuated
 
Okay, seems alot easier than I was making it. There's only 3 bolts holding it on. In the far back is the manifold for the line in/out. Should I be able to take it out without taking anything else off? Seems kinda tight in there, though looks like more room than there is for the oil filter.

The shop I bought it from recovered the coolant and was going to recharge it before I bought it. The owner was planning on keeping the car till I came along and offered to recharged it and replace something else with it (blower/condenser maybe) but I turned him down, I'd rather just drive with the windows down and not waste the gas. Plus I needed the car to get to work asap. So no worries cracking the system open.

I know alot of you have been turning wrenches for years, I'm kinda just starting out trying to learn things myself, from my dad, and internet guru's partly out of necessity, but also I enjoy being able to work on my own car and learn new skills I really appreciate the help and patience found here.
 
After you have disconnected the lines from the a/c compressor, make sure that you seal up the lines as best as you can so moisture and foreign matter can't get into them. Allowing crap to get inside is an invitation for disaster when you decide to replace the compressor and the a/c system again.
 
Finally had a warmish day here. Got it out and the delete pulley installed. For anyone searching on how to take out a compressor in the future. There's 3 bolts that drop it down. I had to have someone hold it kinda up and forward so I could get a socket on the manafold bolt, which I took out the air filter box to be able to reach from the top. (with like 4 socket extensions). Then you just kinda push it forward over the tranny (?) line and wiggle the back down and out. The delete pulley just bolted on where the old one was, had to use a couple washers though, the bolts that came with the pulley were all a sliver too long. So far so good and no squeaking.

Just have to change the oil from when it almost overheated and add some coolant. Not sure where mine went, but the things beeping that the coolant is low. Wasnt steaming or making a mess anywhere.
