"used" hid -vs- new hid kit...pros and cons.

I just had a hid go out and am debating buying a used oem hid or buying the hid kit from mafioso or online somewhere. mafioso's sounds the best as far as kits go just because i wouldnt want to jimmy rig some adapters and would like the ease of plug and play(dont really want to start splicing wires either though) and that you can get ahold of him if needed.

i wish i could just go down to ford and get a new fuggin light. i want to keep it oem, but how long is a used light gonna last. most are guarunteed but for how long? if it burns out in a week or even a year i am back in the same boat. and i could sell the one good hid i have still and recoup some of my money.


i dont know what to do. what are your guys thoughts on this? i wish i could keep stock but i dont wanna be back with the same prob sooner than later......sigh.....fricken hid's.
 
My OEM HIDS look like cheap candles compared to Mafioso's HID kit.

If I were you, I would ebay off my OEM bulb to help offset the cost of the conversion.
Had you jumped on this before you had a burnt out light, you could have ebayed both OEM HIDS for ALMOST as much as the conversion costs.

I saw a guy do just that, and wound up paying 85.00 out of pocket for the Mafioso HID kit.

I've seen two cars with Mafioso's HIDS both were brighter and lit up faster than my OEM HIDS.

+1 for mafioso HIDS!
 
Go with Mafioso, I just bought his kit. Haven't installed yet but I am eager to get them on.
 
did you guys have to cut off your connectors on the oem hid to splice in the mafioso hid's? or does he include the right wiring? so then i can sell my one good hid with it having the right connector. if he sends the right harness then at least i have half my money back.
 
You have to cut the connectors from the stock HID ballast and wire it to the power wire for the new HID ballast... I used crimp connectors and it is working fine.

I love my Mafioso HID kit and am 100% satisfied with the purchase... I also sold both my working bulbs and recouped almost all of my out of pocket cost.

someone bought them even though they had the connectors cut off?
 
The ballast is seperate from the Bulb. Apparently you don't touch the wiring on the bulb only the power wire to the ballast. The ballast aren't really worth too much anyhow so not a big deal.

Where are the stock ballast located in general?
 
The ballast power plugs, they plug into the cars chassis harness.... here's a pic.

The ballasts are behind the front bumper about in the middle but a little closer to the passenger side...

As said in the other thread. I've done two of mafioso's conversions. He offers a nice product. I also have a set of his rings that i will part with if someone wants to run a cheap ebay kit on thier car it would enable them to do so.

Its much faster to just replace the bulb and cheaper but if your plan on keeping the car - getting the rings or buying the whole kit is really the only way to do it for ease replacement in the future.

You DO have to cut the power plug off your existing ballast and cut the plug off of mafioso's kit. Its not a big deal, takes 5 minutes if you know how to solder.


About that - brandon You need to at least heat shrink those connectors or something. Personally i would never do something like that - Anything on the outside should be soldered and heat shrinked...doesnt cost much even if you have to by a soldering iron. I even taped mine up and re wrapped the split loom around and then taped the split loom up. :p
 
That is by no means permanent... my engine bay will be going through a MASSIVE revision here soon... many changes will be made.... that was a 30 second solution....
 
If anyone wants oem bulbs that haven't been used long, I have two. They're 4 years old and haven't been used in 2, when they were used it was rare, I did alot of daytime driving without the autolamp on.

Thanks for the input all. I know now I am going to go with mafioso's kit. Now i just gotta figure out which bulbs, huh? Anyone know which ones would resemble stock the closest? A little more blue tint might be nice though. whadaya all think?

To stay as close to OEM use 5000 bulbs temp.
 
Stock is 4300K so the closer to that you stay the more it will look like stock. I have 6000K and parked next to a stock Mark VIII it's not much different, a little more blue but the average person probably wouldn't notice.
 
I have 6000k because I like the more bluish tint.... but when you are driving it still looks really white.

4300k is stock, 5000k or 6000k are very close....
