Trans all fixed and I feel like a TOOL for it...

So typical shudder and slipping was all my trans did. Plus when I went to put it into gear it would take it's own sweet time. Then when I would come to a stop I had to wait a second to keep from doing a neutral drop :eek:

Since I hit the big 200 mark I figured it would be better to service the trans rather than just replace it as I thought it was shot. Brief history, got the car @133k and do oil changes but was told the trans had been converted to synthetic ATF. I never thought anything about it sept for putting in Lucas every time it was low.

Well 70 some off thousand miles later and probably 6 or 7 Lucas trans fix it's I did a trans service. The ATF was a sort of Brownish red, dunno if that was from being burnt or more the color of the Lucas trans fix. Anyway after doing it about 20 miles later all the shudder stopped and it go's right into gear right away! Shift nice and smooth and almost all if good now. Well except for the drive shaft rumble that has become fierce over 70 :confused:

Didn't do it before as I put in a 93' solid shaft, so I searched these forums but I still can't seem to find anything to look at to try to fix it :(
 
That and when I did the rear wheel bearings I got under and checked the drive shaft for any looseness or play in the joints and yoke. Everything felt quite solid and tight prying on it so if anyone knows and easy way to pull the shaft outta a Mark :shifty:
 
That's the problem... the joints don't really move so they get stiff and the shaft starts to vibrate bad.....
 
Yeah but I want someone to tell me the secret way to get the drive shaft out easy :confused: !!!
 
While you have the diff out, swap a complete Trac lock rear end with taller gears from a mustang. You will thank me later.

Already dropped it to put in my new 4:10 Trac Lock settup. Almost wish I had done a 4:30 but I got the 4:10's for $80(where FORD gears to!) and the Trac Lock for $100. No need to change that at this point.
 
4:30s are not for me. the 3:73 are perfect for my driving habbits (when I actually drive it). I didnt want to lose the highway speed or mpg.
 
Yeah well if I actually fix the drive shaft then I will have to throw on this set of the winter street slicks for E-town :D

Yeah for about 2 years I ran 4:56's in a 71' RT Challenger with a 440. What I would have done for an overdrive in my 727 back then :rolleyes:

Mine rumbled for a long time, I checked it for slack about 4 times.
Then one day it began that tell tale ujoint squeaksqueaksqueak

So I pulled the shaft and discovered instanty what the problem was.

the front Ujoint was completely solid/seized.

Well at this point I have 3 Mark 8 drive shafts. I have the original I took out when I put in the 4:10's with the 93' and I have another 96' that I was going to use to have a one piece made and it was there for measurements.

I know I gotta take it out and see but at least I have 2 others as back up?
 
Sometimes you can take the DS loose from the rear and index it to a different position and it'll take alot of the rumble out.

I'd try rotating it 180 first..then 90 if 180 didn't have an effect then 180 from there.

it's only 3 tries and you'll know.
meh...what's a hour...worst part will be jacking it up and down and up and down.
dont get lazy on the 3rd time and leave out the jackstands!

Actually I think the worst part is gonna be getting out from under half way to take it out of park so I can spin the shaft to undo the other 2 bolts :(
