Hi All,
I am new to LVC, and as of last week am the proud new owner of 06 LS8.

Last week my power steering pump started to sound like it was out of fluid, very noisy when turning at low speeds.

Well, it wasn't. So I drained what I could out of the reservoir and refilled it with new fluid.

This also didn't help.

So then I drained the reservoir again and added that 2 part conditioner from Murray's Auto Parts.

Still no help.

Everything works great, and actually the noise is almost normal under the hood, BUT it is fairly loud and extremely annoying inside the car.

Thanks in advance for any and all help!

I wound up putting a tube of rear differential additive (for limited slips) into the reservoir. Took a couple of days to work itself through, but the low speed squealing I used to hear from the steering column is virtually gone now.

Thanks for the response, I am assuming you have had it this way for a while with no issues?

Been squealing since I got it in December of 03 and there were no problems. Have had the additive in there for about 3 weeks and no side effects as of yet.

Lincoln has a TSB on this. Yes you add some special sauce to the P/S fluid. Go to the Ford dealer and get a bottle of XL-3 Friction additive. See if this helps. Pretty cheap about $5/bottle.

NO Luck

Thanks guys drained most out and put in the additive, but it still is loud as heck when I turn the wheel. It still whines like it is out of fluid. Any ideas?

I guess atleast it functions as it should.

Is there any way this sound could actually be the water pump, and just amplified when the PS pump puts a load on it?

I have an 06 and mine also makes the whirring sound at low speeds. Next time I'm at the dealer I'll ask them about it...

Are any of you guys still under warranty?

Do you notice any change in steering effort/assist?

I killed my p/s pump doing doughnuts (apparently the pump doesn't handle 6k rpm and wheels turned to lock...only did it once....never again) After the fun and smoke was gone, the pump was noisy and once warm i didnt have full assist. it was an expensive doughnut.

good to know, thanks

Just wanted to give you guys a quick update.

The additive did not work. I had to buy a new pump.

For those of you who have to replace a power steering pump on a 2006:

It is the same as the 03-05, even tho everything says it's not.

Ford just changed the part number in their system, which screwed up all the after market suppliers.

For example Advance Auto Parts wanted $150 for a 06, and $50 for a 05.

Anyways just wanted to let everyone know there is no difference.

Thanks again for all the help!
